This book caught my attention during an Audible sale with the name of the ancient poet, Rumi, in the title. Into my cart it went after reading the title description. I’m curious about Rumi as his poems are frequently referenced in the spiritual media I have been studying. While this book is not about Rumi explicitly, it is a memoir of the author’s personal spiritual journey and her application of Rumi’s poems.

One would rarely associate a name like Maulana Jalaluddin Mohamed Balki as being the best selling poet in North America till date – but he is and goes by the name Rumi , 13th century Persian mystic poet .

Credit goes to Coleman Barks for translating his works which has now has permeated the West . For Rumi transcends trivial religious ideologies , geographic boundaries and even time .

The book is a transformation the author Melody Moezzi undergoes , a first generation born American immigrant diagnosed with bipolar manic depression who incorporates Rumi’s anecdotes of wisdom in her life thanks to her father Ahmad , a retired physician . Each chapter is prescription for a host of emotional maladies from Rumi ; something Ahmad a self-certified Rumi addict has been doing his entire life .

While the book is about Moezzi’s road to enlightenment and connecting with her Persian heritage , it seemed a bit bland at times ; I was more drawn to the father - daughter relationship which was beautifully captured . ( )
