"Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean's tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she so loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world's last flock of Arctic terns and follow them on their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his salty, eccentric crew with promises that the birds she is tracking will lead them to fish. As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny's new shipmates begin to realize that the beguiling scientist in their midst is not who she seems. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of letters to her husband, and dead set on following the terns at any cost, Franny is full of dark secrets. When the story of her past begins to unspool, Ennis and his crew must ask themselves what Franny is really running toward-and running from. Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Migrations is a shatteringly beautiful ode to the wild places and creatures now threatened. But at its heart, it is about the lengths we will go, to the very edges of the world, for the people we love"--… (altro)

Set in a dystopian near future where most animal species have gone extinct, this is the story of Franny Stone, a woman whose passion for birds leads her to make a journey to follow the last of the arctic terns in their migration from the Arctic circle to Antarctica.

Franny manages to convince captain Ennis Malone to let her travel on the Saghani. As she embarks on this adventure flashbacks gradually reveal Franny’s story, from her childhood in Galway and Australia to her marriage to ornithologist, Niall Lynch. As her secrets surface, we discover a woman who is a wanderer to the core and deeply connected to the ocean. Hers is a life of abandonment, sleep walking, nightmares and difficulty maintaining relationships.

This was a beautifully written book but confusing at times due to the time shifts into different periods of Franny’s past. It wasn’t an entirely realistic read, but I guess that’s fine as it is fiction. The audio narration was well done. ( )

This was a stark and beautiful (fictional) meditation on guilt, loneliness and acceptance of oneself. Exploring the paths, often dark, always unexpected, that grief may take us on ( )

Haunting story of a wild girl and the dying wild.

It’s beautifully written and intertwines themes of environmentalism, loss, home and redemption. The prose is lyrical and evocative, however there is foreshadowing of something dark about Franny. And by the end of the book I severely disliked her and the chaos she wrought in her wake. But the birdies, my heart for the birdies. ( )

Breathtaking. Only so very slightly dystopic and futuristic; just us in a few years. The sea-ness is moving. The family and tragedy and marriage stuff, meh.
Being ever so loyal to places I've been, I was very excited for a small mention of Ushuaia. ( )

I stayed up all night reading [b:Migrations|42121525|Migrations|Charlotte McConaghy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1590447310l/42121525._SY75_.jpg|65230718] by Australian [a:Charlotte McConaghy|2869149|Charlotte McConaghy|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1573700805p2/2869149.jpg].
An absorbing futurist tale of species extinction and the last Arctic terns chased by a hungry herring fishing boat. The crew and their boat end up scattered to Antarctica sought by authorities. Guided by a troubled but determined young woman who's tagged a couple of the birds and traces them on her laptop, we learn though flashbacks of her peripatetic background and sketchy history. The tale kept me up way too late and while not my usual fare, I was completely taken with the writing and the story. ( )

Young adult novelist McConaghy (the Chronicles of Kaya series) makes her adult debut with the clunky chronicle of Franny Stone, a troubled woman who follows a flock of endangered Arctic terns on what is believed to be their final migration home. While McConaghy’s plot is engaging, her writing can be a heavy-handed distraction (“out flies my soul, sucked through my pores”). Lovers of ornithology and intense drama will find what they need in this uneven tale.

The animals are dying. Soon we will be alone here.

Once, my husband found a colony of storm petrels on the rocky coast of the untamed Atlantic. The night he took me there, I didn't know they were some of the last of their kind. I knew only that they were fierce in their night caves and bold as they dove through moonlit waters. We stayed a time with them, and for those few dark hours we were able to pretend we were the same, as wild and free. -Chapter 1
