"They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past. Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can't ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price. But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn't know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way--even if it kills her. Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies." --Publisher.… (altro)

Oh, John Marrs, how I love you! This book was so good! I couldn't not figure out if it was the daughter or the mother who was absolutely batshit. I kept going back and forth. It seems like the daughter, and then the mother, and then the daughter. It was just so good and some really amazing twists I didn't see coming, and a few I did see. SPOILER: I knew the father was killed early on, but I think by the time we get to learning about his murder, I still thought it was the mother who killed him. And I thought for sure the son would pull out in the end...like they'd find him in the basement alive and he would be OK. But Mr. Marrs murders him too...this was a good one! I still love John Marr's speculative fiction better, but his other books are def a close second! ( )

This book is intense! I enjoyed the point of view layout and the way the events were laid out. If you are a parent, it's likely gonna mess with you pretty bad. There are trigger warnings, so look those up to be prepared. Please read the prologue and epilogue as they are so important. The ending will either enrage you or help the story feel justified. I'm the latter. It's not an easy read if you like milder stories. ( )

Wow wow wow. A dark psychological thriller pertaining to a complicated mother/daughter relationship. Every time one of my questions was answered, another one rose up. I could not put this book down!! ( )

A clever descent into psychosis. Not much to help the reader anticipate how things will work out. A story of imprisonment and delusion. Who is the real villain. ( )
