A story of life, love, loss and seeking more, three generations of women are all on a journey to change their circumstances and find the life they believe they were destined for . . . revealing a terrible secret that changes it all. In 1960s Ireland, Maggie Treacy has never felt she belongs. Determined to change her life, the transformation doesn't come without cost, but she isn't going to let anything stand in her way. Never comfortable with losing control, most of her stories gather more legs than a spider. She cuts her family off in hope of a better life, not really thinking much beyond the wedding and the big house. An ideal vicar's wife? You decide . . . Felicity, Maggie's daughter, endures a lonely and neglected existence. She longs for the simple life that her mother left behind. A prisoner in her own life, she yearns to escape, to be part of the life that she looks out at. Will she find the love and sense of belonging that she's always been denied? Felicity's daughter, Ann, otherwise known as Bella, is lost. A spectator in her own life, she doesn't know who she is any more. Married into a wealthy Dublin family, she has everything she ever wanted, except the love she once knew. When her husband turns out not to be the man she thought he was, battling her demons, she seeks to uncover the truth about the past, always lurking in the shadows. Their lives had seemed so perfect until they weren't. Can Bella evolve beyond the secret that has torn them all apart? Will she ever look at things with fresh eyes and a new understanding? An entertaining read that transcends time with history repeating itself, proving it's not our circumstances that define us but the power within to change.… (altro)

It took me to long to read this book. For a few reasons....one suppppper busy and two I just couldn't get into it until the end. Towards the end was the best part. I honestly struggled to understand the back and forth (probably more on me than the author).
A girl hated how she grew up and moved away and married a Reverend. She tried hard to get pregnant and never could. She faked a pregnancy and arranged an "adoption" that she never told her husband. He treated her daughter very badly. The daughter grew up and got pregnant. Had her baby and moved away. Had the fairytale love everyone dreams of. ....the rest....you can read to find out ( )

Love conquers all
It was easy to get wrapped up in these three generations of women and their families. Some you have to hate and some you will love. Each chapter ending left me wanting the next part of the story revealed. Nicely done! ( )

This was an excellent, but very sad read. Maggie/Margot strived to get to the "better" part of town and live the life she thought she deserved. Instead she became a bitter, angry person who thought she was better than everyone. Her daughter lived life locked in her house suffering physical and mental abuse by her mother as her father turned a blind eye to what was going on around him. When just 17 she found herself in what would normally be a very difficult place to be but instead she found herself surrounded by the love she always deserved. I really enjoyed this book but thought it left so many unanswered questions. ( )

Came close to DNF, however, I had pledged myself to provide a review, so here it is.

I found this a dreary tale. What's up with the title? I have no idea. Destiny neither sings, nor does it even play a major role in this sob story about two social climbers who can think of no other (or quicker) way of bettering themselves than snatching at the first male of perceived higher status thrown in their way, almost immediately finding out they Didn't Think This Through.

One of them then resorts to mindless and to my mind) pointless cruelty and power games, which takes up some three quarters of this book. Throw in melodrama and teenage pregnancy to supply a half dozen telenovelas, cover the huge plotholes with way too many 80s fashion and pop culture details best forgotten and hand out the hankies.

I guess this was simply not for me. The right audience may enjoy a gripping story written fluidly and using correct orthography.

One minor issue was that my e-book version came with a formatting conflicting with my default settings, so I had to constantly re-adjust to be able to continue reading. ( )
