London, 1918. Arabelle Denler is a nurse working in a London hospital; Phillip Camden is an airman now working for British Intelligence (alongside characters from The Number of Love). Arabelle knows Camden by sight and by reputation; he finds out about her when he learns his sister is in love with Arabelle’s fiancé.

I enjoyed Arabelle and Camden’s interactions with each other, especially once they start to get to know each other. I didn’t like the antagonist’s contribution to this narrative. There’s quite enough tension without her, between the dangers of wartime London and the protagonists’ respective issues -- Arabelle has a complicated relationship with her father and has reasons for having agreed to marry a man she doesn’t love. Camden, the sole survivor of his squadron, suspects he will be officially blamed for his men’s deaths sooner or later, and has reasons for keeping quiet everything he knows about the incident.

All things considered, what I enjoyed about this story certainly outweighed what I didn’t.

“You’ll not dissuade me, Arabelle. I’ve made up my mind, so just resign yourself to an escort.”
“I don’t need a… a guard dog!” She moved to sidestep him the other direction and, as soon he shifted to compensate, darted around him on the first.
He was at her side within a step. “Woof.”
It was anger simmering. It had to be. She couldn’t let it be amusement, couldn’t let it be gratitude, and certainly couldn’t let it be hope.

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White has Arabelle Denler working as a nurse at Charring Cross Hospital in London of February of 1918. The young ladies volunteering at the hospital gather each evening to watch Phillip “Black Heart” Camden walk from the Admiralty building where he works to his residence. Many people believe Phillip should still be in prison for what he did to his squadron. It does not help that Phillip receives threats daily from the wife of one of the deceased pilots. Phillip’s mother comes to London needing his assistance. It seems his sister, Cassandra has gotten herself into a pickle with a fellow. He would like to marry her, but he is already betrothed. Phillip decides to intervene in his own unique way and meets the heiress Arabelle Denler. Phillip becomes Arabelle’s protector and Arabelle realizes she is meant to help him heal. Philip is surprised when a woman approaches him one day outside the Admiralty. He can tell she is up to something, and it is up to Phillip to uncover the truth. On Wings of Devotion is the second novel in The Codebreakers series. It can be read as a standalone if you have not read The Number of Love featuring Margot De Wilde. Arabelle Denler and Phillip Camden are great characters. Arabelle is a Christian woman who believes God put Phillip in her life for a reason. Phillip wishes he died with the rest of his squadron in The Incident (as he calls it). He is a strong man with a big heart. You can tell that Phillip loves his family and will do what it takes to help them. He also has a fun-loving side which rarely comes out. The two of them complement each other which makes for an entertaining story. The author has a wonderful writing style which draws the reader into her story and holds them until the end. Roseanna M. White captured the time period and made me feel that I was there with the characters. I loved the intrigue surrounding our mystery woman and I could not wait to see how this thread would playout. I liked that Margot De Wilde and her fiancé (from The Number of Love) are in the story along with Barclay Pearce and his family from Shadows Over England series. On Wings of Devotion is a story of forgiveness and redemption. The author combined romance, humor, mystery and intrigue along with complex characters into one entertaining story. ( )

What a book! Roseanna M. White has done it once more with another amazing story. From the very beginning you are sucked in, unable to break away.

Arabelle and Camden... where do I even begin? Roseanna writes in such a way you can't help but fall in love with her characters. The depth to all of them. I wanted to be best friends with Arabelle, she is such an amazing person and so inspiring. I found myself reflecting on my own life while reading their story. I want to be just as forgiving, just as good as Arabelle. And getting to know more about Camden was a wonderful journey.

The Faith content Roseanna puts in her books is fantastic. And the humor! I just loved all of Arabelle's and Camden's witty comments. So many good quotes from this story!

Getting to know more about the people who worked in Room 40 was great. I love all the history Roseanna puts in her books. Though it wasn't as strong in this story as in her others, it was there. The details she adds makes it feel like you are really there.

The mystery element was intriguing and kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next? What were they planning?

As you can tell I loved this faith filled story, showing forgiveness and second chances. It inspired you to have a deeper prayer life with God. To draw from His strength and not count on your own.

I could not put this book down. It is 381 pages long and I read all but the last 80 pages in one day. In one sitting. It was just so good.

I received this book for my honest review. ( )

WHY I CHOOSE THIS BOOK

Did I read the back cover blurb before requesting this book for review? No, of course not. All I did was read the first book in the series – The Number of Love. You can read my gushy review for that book here. That pretty much sums up why I jumped on the chance to get this book for review when I found out the release date.

And good news for you! This book can totally be a stand-a-lone. It will only give minor spoilers to the first book in the series if you read them out of order which is a huge plus. The books contain a lot of the same characters (as well as guest appearances from other series) which will make your heart do a happy dance if you’ve read those other books.

WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BOOK

December was one of my most busy months to date with long work hours and a lot of life happening, therefore I didn’t get to talk about this book as much as I wish I could have with y’all. It also meant I had to separate my reading time to over the course of a week, rather than downing it all in one gulp. And yo, folks, that was hard to do because I didn’t want to put it down.

With her delightful writing style, thoroughly developed characters, intriguing plot, and phenomenal world-building skills, Miss Roseanna blows the reading world away once again with a fantastic book.

Crack the book open and you’ll instantly be whisked away to the world of World War One, viewing life from both the civilian and military side of things. I highly recommend you give yourself several hours of reading time before you sit down with this book, because you won’t want to put it down.

This book was a tale of loyalty, selfless caring, and showing God’s love to others. Arabelle is a nurse who is wholly devoted to helping others – be that a hard-to-love father, a faithless-human-who-I-won’t-name-cause-of-spoilers, her patients, random strangers, and everyone in-between. I’ve always considered myself a loyal person, but am exceedingly thankful that I haven’t had my loyalty tested to the max like Arabelle. Her emotions were so easy to understand and relate to, and I rooted for her the entire book.

Camden – the main male character – wasn’t my favorite character, but I don’t think he was supposed to be. He’s thoroughly written, has highly redeeming qualities (among his black-hearted ones), and has a family who I really liked.

Most of the time when I read a book that changes perspectives I have one perspective I like the best, but in this book, everything flowed seamlessly and I enjoyed getting to see the world no matter who’s eyes I was looking through.

The spying element was different from the last book, and I’m still not sure how I felt about how one of the plot-trains ended, but it was still well-done.
CONCLUSION WITH SLIGHT SPOILERS

SPOILER: From the back cover blurb y’all can assume that Arabelle and Camden are romantic interests in the story, so no spoiler there. My issue with their relationship is that Arabelle is a Christian throughout the book, and Camden isn’t. The Bible talks about how we shouldn’t be yoked together unequally, etc… and so it always bothers me in Christian fiction when this type of relationship is a common element.
END of SPOILER

As for the rest of the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend this series (and Miss Roseanna’s previous series) to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction or wants to give it a try.

I can’t wait until the next book by this author comes out!

RATING

I’m giving On Wings of Devotion 4 out of 5 stars. I’m so grateful for the generosity of the author and publisher for sending me a copy of this book so I could review it and share it with y’all. ( )

Dang. This series and these characters just keep getting better!

I loved Arabelle and could relate so much to her. And Phillip is her perfect match. I can't say I adored Phillip, as he isn't usually the kind of guy I like, but his character was nonetheless fabulous and I loved him, even if I didn't love him, ya know? ;)

White's writing style is as beautiful as ever. I instantly feel like I'm living in the time period with the authentic and historically accurate dialogue and descriptions. The history lessons White includes are so fascinating as well, and never dry or boring or interrupting the story.

Speaking of story, from page one I was draw into the story and couldn't put it down! Even the slower moments kept my interest and the fast-paced suspenseful moments had my heart racing.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed book two in The Codebreakers series, and can't wait to get my hands on book #3! I cannot recommend this enough if you are a lover of rich and fascinating historical fiction with a side of romance, espionage, and suspense. You definitely want to check this one out!

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions. ( )
