In this revealing history of Allende's Chile, Jonathan Haslam uncovers the actual involvement of Cuba, the Soviet Union, and the CIA in that country's struggle for political and economic stability. The story begins by tracing the trajectory of the communist and socialist parties from the pre-war period through to the dramatic election of Salvador Allende as president of Chile in 1970, in a country long accustomed to political democracy but divided by great inequality of income. It weaves in an account of a new force linked to Castro's Cuba, and elucidates the longstanding politicization of the Chilean armed forces through mere talk of action in the early 1960s to the attempted coup d'etat of 1969 and the coup of 1973. It highlights the personal profile of Allende and his close ties to Cuba, and shows Soviet indifference to the fate of the regime during a period of emerging detente with the United States, which meant enduring isolation for this precarious socialist experiment. In this tragic tale of assisted suicide, The Nixon Administration and the Death of Allende's Chile underlines the chronic mismanagement of the economy in the drive to socialism on the back of a minority franchise. It deepens our understanding of close US involvement in attempts to block the formation of the Unidad Popular government, and how it then attempted to bring down the regime by massive subsidies to nationwide strikes, engineering a coup led by the navy behind the back even of CIA stations in Santiago.… (altro)

Exorcising Terror: The Incredible Unending Trial of Augusto Pinochet di Ariel Dorfman (Starom)
Starom: The Nixon Administration and the Death of Allende's Chile is a powerful and thoroughly informative account of the rise and tragic fall of Salvador Allende and his UP coalition. Exorcising Terror follows the story of the genocidal general, Augusto Pinochet, giving a detailed account of the events surrounding his 'arrest' and 'trial'. A shocking but vital account of the shambolic 'trial' of one of the world's biggest War Criminals. Reading the two, one after another, is a great way to fully comprehend the scale of these events and surely necessary reading for all political scientists to ensure that History cannot repeat itself - one Pinochet was far too many.… (altro)

Pirates of the Caribbean: Axis of Hope di Tariq Ali (Starom)
Starom: Socialism and anti-Imperialism have been rife in South America for decades. The rise of Salvador Allende in Chile (and his eventual, tragic demise) were testament to such feelings - he stood up against American interests in his country and paid the ultimate price for his bravery. However, his legacy lives on. In 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Axis of Hope', Tariq Ali gives his analysis of four leaders in modern-day South America: Evo Morales of Bolivia, Rafael Correa of Ecuador, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and, of course, Fidel Castro of Cuba. His writings of each country are full of candid interviews, remarkable diaries (particular the ones surrounding the attempted military coup on Venezuela) and wonderful anecdotes, allowing one to truly comprehend South America from Ali's perspective. Each of those men share the anti-Imperialist stance of Allende and each of them aims to move their country to socialism. Chavez' story is particularly telling - especially when one considers that his fate was almost identical to that of Allende. Both men were brought into power by a democratic vote, but neither man had the full support of all of his countrymen. Both vehemetly opposed CIA/US interests in his homeland, nationalising industries and blocking US domination - both were subject to opposition from these organisations. Both were removed from power in a US/CIA-backed military coup. Both faced execution at the hands of the coup-leaders. Yet Chavez support was much greater than that of Allende and, ultimately, the coup collapsed and he returned to power, stronger than ever. In short, this is a brilliantly informative and, often, fascinating collection of Ali's opinions on South America - a must read for those with a true interest in Bolivarian/Socialist/anti-Imperialist politics.… (altro)

Hugo!: The Hugo Chavez Story from Mud Hut to Perpetual Revolution di Bart Jones (Starom)
Starom: The Nixon Administration and the Death of Allende's Chile is the story of Salvador Allende - the Chilean socialist leader who rose to power democratically and was pulled from power as a result of a US/CIA backed military coup. Hugo!: The Hugo Chavez Story tells the life-story of Hugo Chavez - the Venezuelan socialist leader who also rose to power democratically and was also pulled from as the result of a US/CIA backed military coup. These books both portray the events with startling clarity - unbiased, highly informative and gripping from start to end. Each books tells a very similar story, but each ends very differently. These books go hand in hand - one to show the almighty Imperialist powers of the US in the so-called 'War Against Communism' and the other to show that US interests are certainly not the only ones that matter - the democratic voice of the people can never be truly silenced.… (altro)
