Yes, it sets the scene for the Mulan going off to war narrative, but it makes her a fully realized person with complexity of emotions that often "princesses" in Disney stories are not depicted with.
A great option for a classroom read aloud with lots of great opportunities for reader's theatre and literature circles. ( )
