I'd re-read the first series not long ago, when I couldn't afford new books, and enjoyed it even more the second time. Plus, it meant I needed no refreshers on who was who for this book. I was delighted that this series starts after Cole and Jae-Min have enjoyed five years married. That's a good solid base of understanding. Love that. All that said, and aside from the murder mystery which was fine, this one wasn't quite as cleanly edited as previous books. The publisher's being awful to many of its authors, and while Ford supports them, maybe they're starting to fail her, too. Here's what really counts; that setup at the end has me intrigued. That is the goal of every first book in a series. Back in Black is the first book in the spinoff series ‘McGinnis Investigations’. This series picks up after the end of the ‘Cole McGinnis’ series. The difference between these two is that the first series was a romance focused on Cole and Kim Jae-Min aka Jae. This series focuses on investigations and mysteries with the characters from the first series making appearances. The narration is in first person from Cole’s pov. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion. Believe it or not, I own the complete ‘Cole McGinnis’ series but have only read the first book. So going into Back in Black, I had a basic idea of a few of the characters and Cole’s background. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to stop my confusion over the numerous people that showed up at the beginning of the story with backgrounds that I knew nothing about. If you don’t mind the confusion, you could probably start this series without reading the first series, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I think you’d miss out on the relationship building. Since it was quite a while ago that I read the first book in the ‘Cole McGinnis’ series, I was at a disadvantage on recognizing whether or not the character voices had stayed the same, but Cole’s seemed like it had. In fact, the start of this book was similar to the beginning of Book 1 of the ‘Cole’ series, which I thought was funny. The mystery was interesting and the author did a good job of giving breaks between the action with character conversations and issues. Cole and Jae are happily married now. I thought the best part of this story was Cole’s thoughts and feelings of love for Jae. The author did a fantastic job of getting into Cole’s head and heart and showing the readers how much he loved Jae. It was by far heads above the mystery aspect of the story. Saying that, I did notice that Cole’s thoughts did get repetitive after a while which dampened the impact because of the repetition. I liked Back in Black’s mystery, but enjoyed Cole’s love for Jae even more. I suggest reading the ‘Cole McGinnis’ series first in order to get the full benefit of reading this series. I give this book, 4 Stars. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
McGinnis Investigations: Book One. There are eight million stories in the City of Angels but only one man can stumble upon the body of a former client while being chased by a pair of Dobermans and a deranged psycho dressed as a sheep. That man is Cole McGinnis. Since his last life-threatening case years ago, McGinnis has married the love of his life, Jae-Min Kim, consulted for the LAPD, and investigated cases as a private detective for hire. Yet nothing could have prepared him for the shocking discovery of a dead, grandmotherly woman at his feet and the cascade of murders that follows, even if he should have been used to it by now. Now he's back in the dark world of murder and intrigue where every bullet appears to have his name on it and every answer he digs up seems to only create more questions. Hired by the dead woman's husband, McGinnis has to figure out who is behind the crime spree. As if the twisted case of a murdered grandmother isn't complicated enough, Death is knocking on his door, and each time it opens, Death is wearing a new face, leaving McGinnis to wonder who he can actually trust. This is the very first book that I've read by this author, but it's only the start for me to enjoy a marvelous series as I go back and binge read the Cole McGinnis series to get a clearer picture of the backstory to the main characters. The mystery is convoluted and fast paced with astonishing plot twists and incredibly sneaky red herrings. Loved it!
I first heard voice actor Greg Tremblay in the Fish Out Of Water series and I was soooo hooked! He is a voice artist in the very best sense and can really make visualizing the character (complete with feelings and gestures) very clear to the reader.
I'm so glad that Dreamspinner Press has their own e-tail shop as well as through several other outlets. ( )
