Liberally borrowing from the lives of the Nobel Prize–winning Italian author Grazia Deledda and her husband, Palmir Madesani, Her Husband follows the fortunes of Silvia Roncella, a talented but retiring writer, and her husband Giustino, who convinces her to move from their small Piedmont village to Rome to advance her career. Once in the capital, Giustino sets about becoming his wife’s agent and publicist, unashamedly advertising her work to publishers, critics, journalists, and the public, and becoming the laughingstock of the city’s literati in the process. Silvia herself, tired of her husband’s enthusiastic machinations, drifts away from him and into the arms of Maurizio Gueli, an older author. In the end, however, the fate of both husband and wife will be touched by tragedy. This gripping novel is as much a critical portrait of the literary scene of early 20th-century Rome as it is a poignant examination of male and female relationships and roles.
