"Classic film stars: They're just like us! They too love books! This collection of photography captures a range of stars taking a break with a good book. On set or shot, in films, or during quiet moments in the stars' own homes and libraries. Each photo will have a fun caption about the star, what they are reading, and when and where the moment was captured. The photography covers a range of book categories--novels, non-fiction, thrillers, cookbooks, and more--all in the clutches of luminaries from the world of film, including: Brando, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Lana Turner, Natalie Wood, and much more. A cute little volume that, unfortunately, suffers from too many flaws.

Hollywood Book Club features full-page, black and white photographs of celebrities reading; the photos are accompanied by extremely brief discussions of the celebrities and the circumstances behind why the photos were taken. Most of the photos are striking, and the ones featuring Buster Keaton and Jack Benny with his daughter Joan are especially charming.

First of all, although this book is often referred to as a ‘coffee table’ book, it most definitely is not; that description is deceptively inaccurate. Hollywood Book Club is way too small to ever be considered a coffee table book.

There is also an excessive amount of wasted space throughout this book. The information provided for each individual celebrity & photo is incredibly scant; the end result is a lot of blank space on the non-photograph pages. What a waste. At the very least, the print could have been made larger, or additional, smaller photographs could have been added. The overall effect of all that white space is both cheap and shoddy.

Finally, it is apparent that no one edited this book. For example, on page 30 (accompanying Errol Flynn’s photo) is written, “The swashbuckling star wrote three books wrote three books over his career…” Either the author really wanted to emphasize that Errol Flynn wrote three books or else nobody bothered to proofread this book. Given how sparse the text is, that kind of laziness is really inexcusable.

Overall, the images in this small book are a treat to peruse, but the book itself is a tremendous fail. If your public library just happens to have a copy, check it out and enjoy the pictures. However, this book is definitely not worth buying. ( )

Browsing this coffee table book is enjoyable. The viewer, however, quickly realizes that almost all the photos in this book are publicity shots promoting a movie the respective star is starring in. There are movie stars who were book collectors, and you can find the books they owned and even read via the book search engines. Marilyn Monroe was one of them. ( )

4⭐ for photos; 2⭐ for text & editing. Even though I watched a lot of old movies when I was little, I still had trouble identifying a few of the stars. In all fairness, they were all *at least* a generation before me (more were two or more generations before me). Anyway, the photos were pretty darn gorgeous, but the writing and editing were mediocre/poor. ( )

The Hollywood Book Club is a new book of curated photos compiled by Hollywood archivist Steven Rea, published by Chronicle Books. The collection features 60 movie stars curling up with books. Celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, and Humphrey Bogart are seen with great literature, thrillers, children books, and more. Some are candid and most are promotional photos.

With its decorative, embossed cover and oversized format, The Hollywood Book Club would make a charming gift for both book and movie buffs. It is also perfect for a cozy afternoon break during this busy holiday season. ( )

An absolutely wonderful book that brought back many treasured memories. As a young preteen I watched many of the stars in this book in various movies, next to my too soon gone grandfather. I guess one could say this is a coffee table book, but it is so wonderful to see these past movie stars reading or posed with various books and book shelves. There is a full sized picture of the featured star and on the following page a description of the star, their movies and what book they are reading. All are in black and white.

Jack Benny reading Final Duck to his four year old daughter. Bette Davis hides her books title by covering the book with a Guild Library dust jacket. Burt Lancaster often fell asleep over his books. Maybe Mansfield in a large bubble bath reading Peyton Place. These are just a few tidbits from this book. Oh, and Gregory Peck. I'll let you guess what he is reading.

ARC from Librarything. ( )
