"An edgy and haunting debut novel about a group of friends who reunite after one of them has returned from a mysterious two-year disappearance. Julie is missing, and the missing don't often return. But Elise knows Julie better than anyone, and she feels in her bones that her best friend is out there, and that one day she'll come back. She's right. Two years to the day that Julie went missing, she reappears with no memory of where she's been or what happened to her. Along with Molly and Mae, their two close friends from college, the women decide to reunite at the eccentric, remote Red Honey Inn. But the second Elise sees Julie, she knows something is wrong--she's emaciated, with sallow skin, chipped teeth and odd appetites. In so many ways, Julie seems to be the friend they all loved and lost. But in others, she seems to be a stranger. When bad weather traps them inside the hotel, tensions flare. Elise begins to hear scratching within the walls, to see the slither of shadows cast by nothing. And as the weekend unfurls, it becomes impossible to deny that the Julie who vanished two years ago is not the same Julie who came back. But then who--or what--is she?"--… (altro)

The story revolves around four good close friends.... Elise, Julie, Mae, and Molly. Each are now in their respective careers and locations, but still connected to each other. When the only married woman, Julie, disappears suddenly...her loss is of course immediately felt by the others...but it seems that the only one who refuses to believe that she's dead is her "best friend"...Elise, and Julie's husband, Tristan. Two years go by and “She’s BAACK” … minus her memory. ” Two years to the day she went missing, Tristan found her sitting on the porch swing . . . " just sitting there like it was any other day.” Through all the guesswork and no matter how much the friends want to welcome her back...you can’t get away from the fact that Julie is . . . "off" . . . in so many ways that will now continue to gnaw to the bone at the other characters...and to the reader. Goose bumps a plenty to go around and then some. "We're all getting used to each other again . . . Not to mention we had a funeral for Julie, and now she's here” . . .While it becomes more and more apparent that something is seriously "wrong", (to put it mildly), ...with Julie, other events start to happen that intensify the feeling of apprehension and dread for whatever the inevitable outcome will bring to light. All the while the atmosphere is changing... bringing with it more sinister undercurrents. The emotions and bonds between the friends are becoming clear to the reader. This...the psychological aspect... is what captivated my attention the most. It was like being given a private window into the thoughts and feelings of others. I can't express enough how well this was accomplished... and how it drew me so much closer to these characters. I haven't even touched on the ending and the differences in Julie...this is intentional, as I feel that to allude to anything more would potentially spoil the experience for other readers. This is a novel you simply need to experience for yourself. Oh... be sure that the lights are all on and the doors are locked. ( )

Terrible. The only reason it wasn’t a total waste of time, and why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1, is the writing was pretty good. But I really can’t stand the horror genre. If I had known I wouldn’t have bothered. ( )

Oh my goodness, y'all, this book...this book was deliciously and vividly CREEPY. And humorous at times. And touching.
Sound like an odd combination?
Yes.
And it worked. What a page turner!

This is the story of four friends who meet up for a weekend away to reconnect after their friend Julie, missing and thought dead, turns up on her front porch on the two year anniversary of her disappearance.

Only Julie is...different.

The story is told from the point of view of Elise, who is closest to Julie. WIth them at what is possibly the oddest and uncomfortably overdone and creepy hotel is Mia and Molly. They all have their own issues and a lot of history together. The tale is part exploration of relationships, of shared pasts and how they bind us together (good and bad), and part pure horror.

Harrison dangles scary bits and bobs at us through the first part of the story. Enough to make us question what Elise is seeing, maybe to wonder if she is paranoid or has more to worry about, and then she really dives into the horror and gore. Her descriptions are vivid, the setting is delightfully weird and the atmosphere is dark. The story picks up speed in the second half and will have you checking windows and doors (and possibly put you off ground beef for a while.)

A fantastic debut from Rachel Harrison - I look forward to reading more from this author. ( )

The end of the book blew it for me
Like normal. Normal. Then a flesh eater.
If it’s a zombie book. Be a zombie book
But don’t throw a zombie in at the end.

I'm not sure if I liked this book or not. It was pretty slow and I feel like some subplots didn't get resolved.

The characters were complex, but not in any way that made me like them. I just have confused feelings about this novel. ( )
