Venice, 1756. One of the city's brightest young actors has been brutally murdered: nailed to a cross in the theatre where he was due to perform, with his eyes put out, and lines of Latin verse carved onto his chest. The Doge, aware the city is full of enemies of the Republic, launches a secret investigation, led by Pietro Viravolta, a dashing young adventurer, and seducer (the best friend of Casanova), who currently awaits execution in the prison beneath the Bridge of Sighs. Viravolta is released, on the proviso that he will neither escape the city, nor pursue the great love of his life, Anna, the married woman whose husband was responsible for Viravolta's incarceration. His investigations lead him to Luciana, the beautiful mistress of a Venetian senator, to Spadetti, the master glass-maker of Murano, and to Caffelli, the tormented priest of San Giorgo Maggiore. Murder follows murder, each more gruesome than the last, and as Viravolta begins to draw the connections between these deaths, and the torments reserved for sinners in each of Dante's circles of hell, he finds himself embroiled in a terrible game of cat and mouse. As the streets of Venice fill with masked Carnival-goers, and as Anna and Viravolta are once again thrown together, he is drawn further into the inferno, to the heart of a secret sect and a plot to bring about the downfall of the city.… (altro)

En 1756, une série de meurtres atroces et mystérieux font vaciller la République de Venise. Devant l’échec des investigations officielles, le Doge décide de faire appel à Pietro Viravolta, retenu dans les geôles vénitiennes pour séduction abusive et libertinage contre nature. S’il réussit à confondre les assassins, il sera libre de ses faits et gestes. Dans une Sérénissime en plein carnaval, il va mener l’enquête auprès de tout ce que la lagune compte de dignitaires. Il découvre très vite que les meurtres en question reproduisent, chacun à leur manière, les châtiments des Neuf cercles de L’Enfer de Dante. À l’enquête de terrain classique se substitue alors l’étude mystique afin d’empêcher la venue de Lucifer sur terre. Mais bien qu’il surfe sur la vague historico-ésotérique, ce thriller n’a rien d’une pâle déclinaison du Da Vinci Code.
Un peu trop rocambolesque à mon goût. Les rebondissements deviennent tellement invraisemblables au fur et à mesure de l'histoire que l'intérêt pour l'intrigue s'émousse. Mais les références culturelles et historiques sont intéressantes. ( )

Set in Venice in 1756 this novel is a pretty straightforward international conspiracy wrapped around a very nasty series of murderous set pieces based on Dante's twelve circles of Hell. The first few chapters were very hard going but the middle of the book made it all worthwhile before a rather hasty and unremarkable denouement. Part of the problem is that the characters are only lightly personalised and the language is rather rococo. Eventually, however, I became accustomed to the baroque style and the shallow characterisation. Once I was able to distinguish the various characters I could enjoy the absurd theatricality of the murders and accept the justification for this extremity. I was, however disappointed by the sudden and predictable course of the last three murders and their ultimate solution. ( )
