I tried to imagine the situation of a historian of natural sciences, working some time in the twenty-first century on a monograph describing Jan Oort's scientific importance. If successful, this historian would have covered in his monograph a very substantial portion of the history of astronomy in our century.

In 1981, Jan Hendrik Oort, then at age 81, published an invited autobiographical essay as introductory article in the 'Annual Review of Astronomy & Astrophysics', AnnRev81, with the title Some notes on my life as an astronomer (Oort 1981e).
