Excerpt from Selected Letters of William Bright, D. D: Regius Professor of Eccleciastical History in the University of Oxford; Canon of Christ Church IN sending forth this Memoir, and selection from the correspondence, of the late Dr. Bright, we desire to thank his many friends who have placed at our disposal diaries, letters, and other re miniscences. Without their co-operation our task would have been impossible. Ln arranging his letters it was thought best to follow, in the main, an order of subjects rather than of dates; while in selecting, those only have been taken which either vividly recall some personal trait, or seem likely to prove of permanent value to the Church as containing his judgment on the points with which they deal. To put his correspondent in possession of the grounds on which his judgment was based, Dr. Bright frequently indicated his authorities. These references have been preserved in the text of the letters, while in the notes others have been added, both to the originals he had in mind and to his own further handling of them in his published works. Unfortunately, T fie Age of tfze Fat/zen: appeared too late for much use to be made of it in this connexion.
