"Thrilling and suspenseful...a modern-day grown-up Nancy Drew." -- Jamie Lee Curtis, Time A Christian Science Monitor Best Book of the Month Emily Harlow is a professional organizer who helps people declutter their lives; she's married to a man who can't drive past a yard sale without stopping. He's filled their basement, attic, and garage with his finds. Like other professionals who make a living decluttering peoples' lives, Emily has devised a set of ironclad rules. When working with couples, she makes clear that the client is only allowed to declutter his or her own stuff. That stipulation has kept Emily's own marriage together these past few years. She'd love nothing better than to toss out all her husband's crap. He says he's a collector. Emily knows better--he's a hoarder. The larger his "collection" becomes, the deeper the distance grows between Emily and the man she married. Luckily, Emily's got two new clients to distract herself: an elderly widow whose husband left behind a storage unit she didn't know existed, and a young wife whose husband won't allow her stuff into their house. Emily's initial meeting with the young wife takes a detour when, after too much wine, the women end up fantasizing about how much more pleasant life would be without their collecting spouses. But the next day Emily finds herself in a mess that might be too big for her to clean up. Careful what you wish for, the old adage says . . . now Emily might lose her freedom, her marriage . . . and possibly her life.… (altro)

This was a nice little tale. Well written, decent characters and an all-around good mystery. Worth a read and also a decent cover. ( )

Careful What You Wish for by Hallie Ephron is a tautly woven mystery about a professional organizer who unexpectedly finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Emily Harlow is thrilled to leave behind her teaching career for her growing business with her best friend Becca Jain. They are professional organizers who help their clients de-clutter their lives. Unfortunately, Emily's long time husband Frank is a compulsive garage sale shopper. Although his hobby grates on her, she is mostly successful in her attempts to ignore his weekly purchases. Their marriage is also in a bit stressed due to their infertility problems. With Frank unwilling to work on their marriage, Emily busies herself with expanding her and Becca's business.

Emily and Becca's newest client, widow Ruth Murphy, hires them to clean out her deceased husband's storage unit. Since Ruth is in a hurry to get his belongings cleared away, Emily immediately heads over to the unit so she can work up an estimate. While in the midst of the task, Frank's best friend and business partner, Ryan Melanson III, begs them to work with his friend, Quinn Newell.

With Becca busy with family, Emily reluctantly heads over to Quinn's house. Bonding over several glasses of wine, Emily and Quinn find common ground as they commiserate over their irritation with their husbands' collecting hobby. Their joking takes a bit of a macabre turn, but the conversation is nothing but a lark for Emily. Unfortunately, Emily's two newest jobs are soon intertwined when she discovers a body in the storage unit and she becomes a murder suspect.

Emily has good reason to be concerned when the police interest in her takes a bit of an ominous turn. As the evidence against her starts to pile up, Emily begins to wonder if someone is trying to set her up to take the fall for the murder. But will she uncover the real killer's identity before she is arrested? And as she inches closer to finding out the truth, will Emily becomes the murderer's next victim?

Careful What You Wish is a suspenseful mystery that is quite engrossing. Emily is a surprisingly clever amateur sleuth but can she trust her own instincts as she pursues her investigation? With unexpected twists and adroit turns, Hallie Ephron brings this ingenious mystery to an exciting and satisfying conclusion.

I enjoyed this book about a professional organizer who finds herself implicated in a murder. However, the clues were way too obvious about who was responsible for framing her.
Emily Harlow is a professional organizer who is called to help an elderly woman, Mrs. Ruth Murphy, after the death of her husband. Then, on the same day, she receives a call asking her to help a young woman, Quinn, clear the clutter of her life when her husband isn't home. Both of these happen when her partner, Becca, is unavailable.
Emily is suddenly the number one suspect when Quinn's husband is assumed missing and then found dead. Emily turns to her husband, Frank, a lawyer, to help her when questioned by the police.
Emily begins to play detective and figures out the mystery.
I thought this novel was light, but it was a quick, and mostly enjoyable read. Perhaps the author could work on not putting so many obvious clues in the next book.

Emily thought that opening a professional organizing business was supposed to be carefree and helpful to others.

Emily's new adventure had been exciting and trouble free until she met Quinn.

Quinn was married to a man who wouldn't let her bring her things into his fabulous house and wanted Emily to help. She and Emily had helped themselves to more than looking at things to remove, though. They had too much wine and said things that shouldn't have been said.

When Quinn's husband turns up missing, Quinn feels she can call on her new friend, Emily, to help her when the police arrive. This client was more than Emily bargained for.

And if this wasn't bad enough, another client whose husband had passed had a storage unit she didn't know about filled with stolen books, maps, and a dead body.

Emily couldn’t believe it. Could these two clients have some connection?

It gets worse for Emily, and it seems as if a few of the characters are connected and involved in the disappearance and death of the body they found.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR was actually a little on the comical side despite all the tension going on.

If you are in the mood for a light, entertaining mystery you will enjoy CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. 5/5

This book was given to me as an ARC by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. ( )

The current craze surrounding Marie Kondo and her personal organizing empire has opened the floodgates for others looking to piggyback on the momentum surrounding the fad. In Careful What You Wish For, Hallie Epron’s protagonist, Emily Harlow, is a newly minted professional organizer who is continuously pitted against characters and events representing deliberate chaos. Emily’s own husband is a lawyer, and (ironically) an avid “collector” of detritus gathered from yard and estate sales. There is obvious tension between them caused in turn by disagreements about their infertility issues and the growing build-up of clutter inside their home. Emily’s need for order becomes further thwarted when she takes on two new clients with complications and convoluted pasts. Both clients provide the novel with mysteries that become increasingly puzzling and intertwined. In one case, Emily is suspicious that her client’s deceased husband may have a collection of stolen items, and the other embroils Emily in a “Strangers on a Train” type plot. As an amateur detective, Emily often shows a degree of questionable judgement and naivete that may cause the reader to experience exasperation at her obtuseness. Careful What You Wish For also contains many twists and red herrings, but savvy readers will not be duped due to the numerous hints provided and their sheer predictability. Ephron’s newest release is a perfect summer read: light, quickly paced and well-written, but probably not her best nor most memorable work thus far.

Thanks to Edelweiss and William Morrow for an ARC of this book in return for an unbiased review. ( )
