Don't know much about the superhero genre, but picked this up at a conference so I could support a BIPOC author and illustrator. I appreciate the representation of a Vietnamese youth as a superhero, the intergenerational aspect (Ba was a Green Lantern, too!), and the multicultural sensibility all around. I grew up reading comics, so winning this new graphic novel of "Green Lantern: Legacy" was a unique joy. A solid story reaffirms one of the core tenets of the Green Lantern saga, that while the singular hero may be honest, pure, and just, they only become stronger with the help of their family (both by blood and by choice.) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Plot Summary: Tai loves hanging out at his grandmother's shop and spends a lot of time drawing. When someone throws a brick through the front window for the third time in two months, he actually tries getting the license plate this time. Tai's parents think this is a sign that Mrs. Tran should sell the store but Mrs. Tran and Tai don't want to. That night, Tai finds his grandmother's ring in his bedroom. He brings it back to his grandmother, who awakens enough to say the ring must have chosen him now. Tai is confused and heartbroken when his grandmother passes that very night. Everyone speaks so highly of her at the funeral but Tai is most focused on the way the ring is literally pulling him to different rooms and places so he can learn that he is now a Green Lantern with magical powers. Even though he's been told not to tell anyone, Tai tells his best friends and takes them on a night fly over the city. But if there are superheroes, what about the supervillains? what about the bad guys...?
Setting: city, maybe NYC?
Characters:
Tai Pham -
Kim Tran - AKA Ba Noi, AKA Mrs. Tran, Tai's beloved grandmother, owner of Jade Market, taught others to meditate
Lan & Bee - Tai's siblings, in college
Tommy & Serena - Tai's friends
Xander Griffin -
Green Lantern Iolande -

Recurring Themes: superheroes, good vs. evil, bad guys, meditation, destiny, love, discrimination
Controversial Issues: none
Personal Thoughts: This quick read had lots of character development and the love between Tai and his Ba Noi was so obvious. Very well written and illustrated, but eager to read more to learn more. Any possible hate crime (brick thrown in the window) was glossed over more as "bad guys" than a hate crime of discrimination.
Genre: fantasy
