For a how-to-read guide, for an amusing idea of a story, for a book that embraces cliches by giving them a tongue-in-cheek twist

Thoughts:
I'd been looking forward to this release for a while, and had been planning to buddy-read it with a friend. Note - a good friend who I'm comfortable with, because holy sex scenes! But we'll get to that. It was even better than I anticipated, in part because it was done a bit differently than I expected. I laughed a lot, and blushed a time or two as well. The cast of characters all work so well together, and the technical aspects of how it was set up worked perfectly in making you love each of them.

It alternates chapters between Gavin and Thea's perspectives, which ensures you understand them both and can root for them each. In this way it brilliantly avoids demonizing either of them, since their pain and motivation is evident. Their background together of the accidental pregnancy and early marriage come into play a lot, and the way Gavin handles it is truly quite touching. Turning the "trapped into marriage" thing back onto himself is a vulnerable and genuine move that makes you think about your own actions twice.

Oh, my god, did I mention how FUNNY this is? I laughed a ton, and that is often a measure of a good book for me (depending on genre, of course. Hopefully I'm not cackling away reading [b:Gone Girl|19288043|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1554086139l/19288043._SY75_.jpg|13306276]). The premise of a bunch of super-macho dudes getting together to read romance novels is obviously rife with opportunities for humor, but the impressive part was the sensitive moments woven in for each of them. Yeah they're macho, but they're also working hard on their relationships despite the difficulties of their professions. And when it comes down to it, sometimes trying is sexy.

Also sexy: the sexy scenes. And they are not shy about working them in, whether in the snippets of the novel-within-the-novel or in the main story itself! Sometimes maybe a little hard to believe, and sometimes also raised questions around what the hell they were doing in bed before all this, because the things that seemed to blow their minds seemed kind of like sex 101. But then again, I guess that's what they were working on, so it makes sense!

A note that some people may be annoyed with having to read generic parts of the book that Gavin and Co. are reading in their book club. You only get bits of the overall story, but for anyone whose read similar period pieces, you'll pretty much be able to fill in the blanks. It's primarily a tool to use as a foil for Gavin and Thea, but I enjoyed them well enough that it wasn't a problem for me. ( )

Funny premise: rich & successful jocks from pro sports teams form a secret book club where they read romance novels as a “user manual” for women and relationships.

It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but what’s MORE ridiculous is the reason our lead couple has broken up: It’s all about sex. She faked it, and then she didn’t fake it, and he got mad and they broke up & almost got divorced over it.

There are excerpts from a fake regency romance mixed in as our hero reads it to get ideas for being nice to his wife. I think I liked the regency plot line more than the main story.

This is just a goofy book. It’s fine to borrow or read at the beach or something but this isn’t the greatest thing out there.

The Bromance Book Club is a fun romance based in the reality of a couple who have lost their spark after a whirlwind romance and children. Gavin is a baseball player in the major league and Thea gave up her career to look after their twins. But after a great day turns into their worst night, the cracks in their marriage begin to show. Fortunately, a group of Nashville’s mean is here to teach Gavin how to romance his wife through romance novels.

Yes, you read that correctly. It’s a novel idea for a romance novel, (I could continue with the puns, but I won’t) an all-male book club learning from romance – written for women, by women as one character says, so following them seems like an easy way to save a marriage. Of course, when you throw real life into the mix, things get messy, but this is one of the major attractions of the novel. It doesn’t go to plan, sometimes in quite refreshing ways. There are sick kids and whinging kids, a WAG who bases her character on Mean Girls, an opinionated sister and bros who couldn’t subtly trail anyone when they wear ridiculous disguises. It’s fun and avoids the typical reasons for tension and arguments in romance.

The book is focused on Gavin’s plan to get Thea back before her deadline for divorce. Through regular meetings with the book club, he learns from historical romance, as well as taking some tips from the other men in the group. There’s some tension between Gavin and another member of the group, Braden Mack, who has absolutely no filter when it comes to anything. Add in a nameless Russian hockey player with gut problems and some of Gavin’s baseball team colleagues and it’s a recipe for good banter as well as some very funny double entendres. But the story also goes into Thea’s thoughts and the problems she’s had being a reluctant WAG, as well as her own ‘backstory’ as the book club puts it and how it’s complicating her current relationship.

Overall the tone of the book is light, with some important lessons learned by both Thea and Gavin. It’s very well paced. Never did I find myself wishing things would hurry up or wondering if I’d miss a chunk. The couple’s children are also portrayed well – not over the top cute, and not as complete ferals. I loved how the book explored Gavin’s vulnerability and not only admitted that he as an alpha male sports hero had stuffed up, but worked through how to make it right, even if it did look less ‘masculine’ at times. (Apparently alpha males love pumpkin spice lattes and I’m here for that!) It was refreshing, and yes, I’m already looking at options to read the next book in the series.

I love that this book has men, especially athletic men, reading romance novels to please their significant other!

I have said for years that men should read romance novels to help them understand women better. I am not saying that men should pretend to be something/someone they are not (that helps no one), just that by reading books that discuss/show what went wrong in scenarios could be helpful with relationships.

There were ups and down for the main characters and it ended just like a well written romance novel should.

This was definitely a break from the standard chick-lit romance books. I might be over scoring my rating a bit just because I've been in a reading rut and the premise felt like such a fresh take, especially with the men's meta discussion of romance novel plot points and callouts to common tropes that are still experienced by the characters in this book.

Good read if you are looking for a romance novel that will make you chuckle. ( )
