It's Gamache's first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.… (altro)

A Better Man is a disturbing book because the author seemed to have lost her place as to where she was ultimately going with the story. It was difficult to keep track of who did what to whom and why. Originally it started out as another districts case and then somehow or other it changed. How come there was no discussion between districts? How come our hero Chief Inspector Gamache's district was in charge? What was the point? Because of the confusion this book received a solid three stars. ( )

Hmm... So obviously I rate these books based on my own internal system and as this is the 15th I have read in this series I have a very high bar for them, higher than I do for other books I read. This story just didn't measure up. It wasn't bad per se, but it wasn't great, it was barely good, and that is just not what I expect from these books. I felt like Ms. Penny forgot to include the scenes involving all the permanent characters who live in Three Pines and they only showed up as two dimensional cutouts for short periods of time, except for Clara who was featured in a really odd side story. The whole book deals a lot with the pernicious effects of social media and writing that for me is the literary equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel. Yet this book missed on that front also. The part of the story dealing with Instagram and private accounts just didn't make sense to me. I know criminals are always smart but the mistake that is made is so easily avoided that including it felt like a very obvious plot device. I also have had ENOUGH of Gamache fighting with the powers that be, it seems beyond ridiculous at this point. Finally, while I do not expect that I will have figured out the mystery in a book (I actually prefer to be surprised), once the "truth" is revealed I want to be able to think back and see that the outcome fits completely with all we have been told. I personally did not see that here. It seemed like a bolt out of the blue. Look, out of 15 books so far there have been 13 that were very good to exceptional, and 2 that really just didn't quite make it. Not bad. I will still look forward to book 16 which will come out this Fall and I hope it reminds me again of the joy I have gotten out of these books. ( )

Still love her characters and setting but this book seems to be a transition piece. Always great lines and character development. Ruth and Rosa still my favorites along with Reine-Marie. ( )

Two heads are better than one, although the Sûreté du Québec might not think so. Gamache has been demoted from the head of the whole Sûreté to the head of homicide…as a replacement for his son-in-law, Beauvoir, who is leaving the force to go to Paris. Their one last job together involves a missing-persons case where the missing person is suspected to have been murdered by her husband. And meanwhile the Rivière Bella Bella is in full flood, threatening Three Pines with great damage and destruction.

This was another great Gamache book. If you’ve been reading the series this long, you probably know what to expect: delicious food, banter with the townsfolk, and the occasional snark from Beauvoir. The only thing I found a bit off was the tweets and Instagram posts in the story. They were relevant to the plot, but I feel that social media in a novel can come across as more artificial because it’s all coming from the mind of one person, whereas real social media posts are obviously written by a variety of authors. But this was a minor quibble—I enjoyed the book very much and am looking forward to more in the series. ( )
