This book is about a little doll that a girl made, but appears unhappy with a zig zag smile. None of the other toys in the shop like him because of how he looks. He eventually is guided to a little girls house who likes him very much, and then his sad zig zag mouth changes to a smile. ( )

A doll-maker makes a funny looking doll named Zig Zag out of scraps and tells him some child is going to love him. That night, the other toys make fun of Zig Zag, calling him ugly and pushing him into the trash can. Zig Zag goes on a journey to find a child to love him, running into some mice who take him to the house of a little girl. He waits on the porch until she brings him inside and plays with him and Zig Zag can finally smile because someone loves him. ( )

Zigzag is a doll made from scraps and is called ugly and he is disliked by the other dolls. He's forced off the shelf of his store, and then decides to leave on an adventure to find someone to love him; along the way, he also finds and protects some mice for a scary crow. ( )

Summary:
Zigzag is doll withe a zigzag mouth. When the doll maker made him she promised there would be someone like him. However, most of the dolls in the shop did not like him since they thought he was ugly so they force hime to leave. Then Zigzag was thrown away by the doll maker and meet an owl and a family of mouse. The mouse brought hime to a warm hearted girl. Finally, the girl liked Zigzag very much, making him felt warm and be loved.

Genre:
This picture book is a modern fantasy since the story springs from authors imagination while the main characters were dolls who can talk and act like human and the story happened in a modern city.

Critiques:
1.The story is very simple. It is easy to understand but part of the plot is abrupt.
2.The medium of the book are linoleum cut and traditional collage and painterly techniques, which is the main attraction and highlight of this book.
3. The vocabulary and the plot in this book are simple and suitable for a pre-school student to read.

Comments on use:
I don't think it's a very good book to read aloud in class since the story is not very great, which is kind of boring for students that they can easily guess what will happen next.
If teacher want to use book, it's probably good for them to show the hand-make cuts in those images. ( )

Sorry, but it's just the same old theme in even gaudier colors. Every misfit toy will find a child to love it - even if said toy goes on lots more adventures than this one did. ( )
