The characters in "The Portrait of a Lady" aren't human, despite their psychological depth. They are intricate creations, working within the labratory of James' mind. Like machines, they are given certain instructions they follow without devation and then are put into a controlled environment where they come into conflict. Though the psychological density of the novel makes it tough going, it's still an engaging read, wrapping its world around you with every page.
