Pitkin (read 28 Jan 2014) This is a book published in 1934. The author was born 6 Feb 1878 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and died 25 Jan 1953 in Palo Alto, Cal. He makes many sweeping statements with the air of one who sees the future unerringly. Some of what he says makes sense, e.g., that people after forty may be better equipped for making decisions, etc., but a lot of his predictions are way off: e.g., that the population of the U.S. would peak at about 175,000,000 in 1975 and thereafter decline. He considers the high schools and colleges of 1932 as doing a very poor job at educating, and accurately says many kids going to college are wasting their time--which is certainly even more true today, when college is often just another four years for kids to have fun and live off their parents.
