Review of the 12-episode weekly podcast* January 28, 2019 to April 15, 2019
Crime novelist Michael Connelly's non-fictional Murder Book podcast Season 1 is titled "The Tell-Tale Bullet." It follows the machinations of a case that began as a murder committed during a car-jacking in 1987 which faltered in its initial proceedings and languished until revived by DNA testing in 2003.
Although a defendant was convicted on August 10, 2017, there are still ongoing appeals in process. One of these will presumably be resolved on June 7, 2019 when the defense's re-testing of the DNA evidence is expected to be revealed. As such, the podcast was somewhat anti-climactic without this further result.
The podcast was initially estimated as 12-episodes, but presumably an addendum episode will follow with future updates.
Overall, this was an interesting case to follow as it presented a long history of the pursuit of criminal prosecution and defense and provided an extremely wide ranging access to courtroom proceedings and interviews with the related participants. It was especially interesting to encounter real-life LA detectives Rick Jackson (retired) and Mitzi Roberts, who are two of the real-life inspirations for Connelly's fictional detective characters of Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard.
