We're all familiar with Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny but there is a whole lot more to the art of Beatrix Potter than these lovely illustrated stories. I do love her drawings of animals and the ink plus watercolour illustrations in the series of children's books. But this series of postcards gives a much broader perspective on her art. It ranges from some of the classic work with waterliies that I recognise from "Mr Jeremy Fisher"...the frog to very sketchy landscapes and the more formal "View from No. 8 Bedford Square. Interspersed within all of this are beautifully rendered watercolours of flowers, fungi, animals and architecture. I must confess that I like her pen and wash drawings probably more than the others but this little collection of postcards certainly shows off her range. I noticed that the cards were published by F Warne and Co. and I had some recollection that Beatrix had married one of the sons of the publisher's family. However, on checking, I found that she had been engaged but, Norman Warne, had died of leukemia before they could get married. ...rather sad. (Though she did marry a local solicitor later when she was living in the lakes district).
Bottom line, a nice collection of post cards that I am keeping as works of art rather than as postcards. I give it 4 stars. ( )
