Now a private eye, Beau is making the adjustment from being a cop and following all the rules to being a citizen who can do things cops can’t. He doesn’t need warrants or probable cause, but he doesn’t have access to all the data bases, either. It’s a trade off he’s learning to deal with. In this mystery, an old friend shows up with his infant granddaughter, seeking Beau’s help in finding his daughter, the baby’s mom. She took from the hospital while the baby was still being treated for drug addiction. He needs her to sign off on custody, so he can the baby out of state and raise her. The mom is a long-time addict and a homeless runaway. But it turns out that she is more than that, especially to Beau. Murder, intrigue, deception, addiction, and the past all come together in this exciting tale. While the book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone, it’s more enjoyable if you know the back stories of the characters. ( )

JP's retirement stays exciting as he undertakes a "pro bono" search for an addict who left behind a premature and addicted infant. All is not as it seems as he shelters the infant and her granddad while seeking the errant mother. Lots of assistance from past and current connections as he uncovers grand larceny, the missing mom and dad, and a possible addition to his still growing family. Lots of moving parts and the use of DNA to sort out who is who keeps the story moving very nicely. Jance's excellent cast of characters is portrayed very appropriately and the tale is well told. ( )

This could be my favorite J.A. Jance novel. It’s a good story with a lot of interesting elements, and I thought it was better than her average book. Unfortunately her style is filled with "Kumbaya" so it will never ultimately work for me; I’ll never find a great book written by her. And it is clearly fiction since the professionals are always off-the-charts smart and resourceful and helpful and going above and beyond (certainly something that is mostly absent in the real world), but I enjoyed this book and knocked it out in a few days. This is my first J. P. Beaumont read and it was entertaining. I like the characters and plot. Though not much of a mystery but the procedure was still interesting.

The narrator was very good and gave life to this character and the whole story. Wow it's book #24 and I'll be adding this series to my to-read series. ( )

This half-hearted effort is the most disappointing book in the entire JP Beaumont series.

Beaumont became a private investigator a couple of books ago and it’s beginning to look like that was a serious mistake. JP and Mel were an interesting, dynamic couple as members of the Washington State Special Homicide Investigation Team. So far, the depiction of Beaumont as a PI has turned out to be rather flat.

Sins of the Father is a lazy effort. The first half of the book plods along, detailing many of the petty irritations of city life in Seattle. I doubt that many readers will find it interesting to read about the traffic hassles and homeless shelters in Seattle. Beaumont repeatedly solves the difficulties he encounters by pulling out his wallet. Unimaginative solutions like that signify the result of a lazy approach to plot development. Authors owe readers ingenious yet plausible solutions to the conundrums they construct. Failure to provide a more interesting solution cheats readers.

Perhaps J. A. Jance doesn’t know what to do with Beaumont as a PI, but what she offers here is clearly not the answer. I fear she has lost her way with Beaumont and may not be able to recover. ( )
