Yosef goes on a journey to Cairo, Egypt to collect the inheritance for his family. As he rode on the caravan, the caravan leader deserted and broke his promise of resting on the Sabbath Day, taking his mother's money possession. Yosef refuses to break the rules of going on a journey on the Sabbath Day despite the risk of starvation in the desert. However, his blessings, promise, and patience comes in a form of a lion sent by the Sabbath Queen that acts as his guardian on the journey to Cairo, Egypt. With the help of the lion, he successfully completes his journey to Cairo to collect the inheritance and returns back to Algiers with his family celebrating the importance of their Sabbath Day for the rest of their life as a blessing and prosperity. The style of this book is rather narrative with dialogues, disputes, actions and events in a sequence, thus provides a perfect example of the narrative style of writing. Overall, a fun lovely book about the importance of keeping your faith and promise strong until the end. ( )

The story showcased the Jewish Sabbath. The youg boy volunterred to go on a trip to Cairo to collect money his uncle had left the family. The caravan did not stop on the Sabbath so Yosef stayed behind to observe it. There was a lion that was sent to protect him and get him back home safely. It was not about the money he was sent to collect but convictions as a Jewish boy that made the book. ( )

Yosef is the oldest of seven children, and their mother is widowed. Yosef works hard all week to help support his family, resting only on the Sabbath Day. When his family inherits a fortune from a long lost relative, someone must travel to Egypt to claim the family's money. Yosef insists that God will protect him on the journey, and his mother agrees, moved by Yosef's faith. When the caravan driver goes back on his promise to Yosef's mother to halt travel on the Sabbath, Yosef chooses to stay behind and celebrate the Sabbath in the customary way. He is cold, lonely and scared, but he prays, and a Lion comes to him for protection and company during the Sabbath, and then sees him quickly and safely to retrieve the money and then to deliver it home. Yosef's story of the Lion is a favorite with his siblings and he is glad to tell the story on every Sabbath afterward.

This story offers a unique view into Jewish customs, traditions, and beliefs. I believe it is better suited for a Sunday school class than a read-aloud in a public school classroom, but it would be a nice addition to the school library for independent reading. It highlights the importance of faith in religion.

This book was about a Jewish boy who travels across the desert to collect an inheritance for his mother. However, he cannot continue his travel on the Sabbath, which is against his beliefs. He prays for help, and receives it in form of a lion who comes to take his on his way. The book is about the importance of family and believing in your faith. It was an interested story from a culture many children are not exposed to in other stories.
