A whip-smart and illuminating exploration of the world's fascination with witches from podcast host and practicing witch Pam Grossman (The Witch Wave), who delves deeply into why witches have intrigued us for centuries and why they're more relevant now than ever. When you think of a witch, what do you picture? Pointy black hat, maybe a broomstick. But witches in various guises have been with us for millennia. In Waking the Witch, Pam Grossman explores the cultural and historical impact of the world's most magical icon. From the idea of the femme fatale in league with the devil in early modern Europe and Salem, to the bewitching pop culture archetypes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Harry Potter; from the spooky ladies in fairy tales and horror films to the rise of feminist covens and contemporary witchcraft, witches reflect the power and potential of women. In this fascinating read that is part cultural analysis, part memoir, Pam opens up about her own journey on the path to witchcraft, and how her personal embrace of the witch helped her find strength, self-empowerment, and a deeper purpose. A comprehensive meditation on one of the most mysterious and captivating figures of all time, Waking the Witch celebrates witches past, present, and future, and reveals the critical role they have played--and will continue to play--in shaping the world as we know it.… (altro)

I listened to this on audiobook but I also have the hardcover. I was following along in the book as I was listening but I read faster than Pam talks so I finished listening while at work and will go back and finish reading the "real" book later. I listen to Pam's podcast Witchwave and love her voice, she has a good cadence and rhythm. I was glad that she was the narrator for the audio version.
There was a lot of history and information to take in, mostly things I would never have known on my own. However, I do disagree with some of the interpretation and symbolism that she sees in some things, as I never saw them the way she does. Like her assessment of some aspects of the cult classics The Craft or The Rocky Horror Picture Show. That's not to say that either of us is wrong, we've just led different lives and view things differently. It was interesting to hear her take on some of these things that I had never thought about before, and getting to hear more about her background and how she became the witchy person she is now. Overall, great book with lots of knowledge and history.

I would recommend this for anyone who has an interest in the history of modern witchcraft and what it means to be a witch. Or possibly any feminists or anyone interested in paganism, witchcraft, or wicca. ( )

An excellent brief history of the witch in popular culture. The only reason this is 4 stars instead of 5 is that there are no references (although there is a very short further reading list) and no index. With just a skosh more effort, Grossman could've provided the references she undoubtedly already has compiled somewhere. An indexing budget would also have been a worthwhile investment to turn an entertaining read into an incredibly useful basic reference work. ( )

Very Witch 101 with meandering pacing, and a bit of a “white feminism” feel. Did learn a few interesting things.

this was a super easy read! non-fiction, a brief and sprawling history of witches and feminism. i really enjoyed some chapters more than others, but overall it was really readable.

a lot of people were like "she mentions trump too often" like, i don't really think so? i thought it was pretty relevant. although i really did wish a lot of the artists mentioned had a photograph of their work because i didn't necessarily have time to google each artist while reading.

i found a lot of her insights pretty interesting. was it eye-opening? not particularly. was it affirming? yah. the nicest part about this is i do have lots of films, pop culture things and historical names to look up after finishing this.

was it the strongest book in the world? no. was i looking for that? no. i enjoyed this a lot. ( )
