It recounts how the two are related to the Anabaptist. It effectively gives a glimpse into the simplicity, humbleness, and obedience of the Old Order Mennonites and Amish. The role of men, women, and their work ethic, education, worship, variation of congregations and excommunication are outlined. The pictures portray the culture and lifestyle of these people. This photographic essay on the Old Order Mennonites was very well written. The layout of the book is very consistent, the text and photographs work well together. The author uses great respect for the community as she notes and depicts the personal lives the subjects in her book. The book states the belief system of the community and how they are struggling to remain their beliefs amongst the modern world. It was interesting to note that several members of the community refused to look into the mirror for fear of being prideful. The book includes a bibliography of Mennonite books. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Old Order Mennonites live in closed communities, rejecting much of modern life. Many still use horse-drawn equipment on their farms; their style of clothing has changed little in the last 100 years. They strive for lives of peace, humility, and simplicity. Yet, as Kathleen Kenna and Andrew Stawicki show, their lives are not simple or easy. After years of attending barn raisings, religious services, and events in private homes, the writer and photographer befriended members of several Mennonite communities, who agreed to be interviewed and photographed.
