"London, 1893: high up in a house on a dark, snowy night, a lone seamstress stands by a window. So begins the swirling, serpentine world of Paraic O'Donnell's Victorian-inspired mystery, the story of a city cloaked in shadow, but burning with questions: why does the seamstress jump from the window? Why is a cryptic message stitched into her skin? And how is she connected to a rash of missing girls, all of whom seem to have disappeared under similar circumstances? On the case is Inspector Cutter, a detective as sharp and committed to his work as he is wryly hilarious. Gideon Bliss, a Cambridge dropout in love with one of the missing girls, stumbles into a role as Cutter's sidekick. And clever young journalist Octavia Hillingdon sees the case as a chance to tell a story that matters-despite her employer's preference that she stick to a women's society column. As Inspector Cutter peels back the mystery layer by layer, he leads them all, at last, to the secrets that lie hidden at the house on Vesper Sands"--… (altro)

Not bad, enjoyable. some things that seem unlikely in Victorian times, police officer being let in the front door of a Lord's house ( servant's entrance would be more likely) woman travelling with a man alone in a coach who is not a relative. I also felt that the spooky atmosphere was not as well maintained as the lighter , humorous atmosphere. Wondered if Wilkie Collins was being invoked Inspector Cutter vs Cuff , gabriel betteredge vs gideon bliss and shivering sands? will try the next when it comes out ( )

Slow start but it grew on me. ( )

Very well written, but the mixture of reality and the fantastic didn't come off entirely successfully and I found it difficult to identify with any of the characters (perhaps because there were two separate trains of story which didn't come together until nearly the end). ( )

I didn't enjoy the paranormal and in general it could've used some editing. Not really my jam. There's some likability in the writing but overall not really for me. ( )

Vivid evocation of Victorian London both in writing style and in details of setting and personalities. I wasn't sure what to make of this particular mystery mixed with supernatural elements. I've enjoyed others much more. ( )
