LAND LOTTERY LISTS OF OGLETHORPE (1804) AND HANCOCK COS., GA (1806)By Martha Lou Houston [reprint] Miss Houston's transcriptions were from the original documents found in the counties in 1926, with additions and corrections by the late Mrs. Sarah Quinn Smith. These are the enrollment lists of men and women citizens of the two counties, who sought to become winners in the 1805 Lottery (Oglethorpe Co.), and 1807 Lottery (Hancock Co.). These lists provide a substitute for Georgia's missing 1810 Census.Oglethorpe Co. has the only surviving 1800 census in Georgia; comparing it with the 1805 Lottery enrollment list provides a rapid way to learn who was new to the county.The 1807 Lottery was the only one in which single women 21 and older were allowed to register and become winners. The Hancock list shows these women as "Spinsters" each entitled to 1 draw.
