Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:A frank, smart and captivating memoir by the daughter of Apple founder Steve Jobs.
Born on a farm and named in a field by her parentsâ??artist Chrisann Brennan and Steve Jobsâ??Lisa Brennan-Jobs's childhood unfolded in a rapidly changing Silicon Valley. When she was young, Lisa's father was a mythical figure who was rarely present in her life. As she grew older, her father took an interest in her, ushering her into a new world of mansions, vacations, and private schools. His attention was thrilling, but he could also be cold, critical and unpredictable. When her relationship with her mother grew strained in high school, Lisa decided to move in with her father, hoping he'd become the parent she'd always wanted him to be.
Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs's poignant story of childhood and growing up. Scrappy, wise, and funny, young Lisa is an unforgettable guide, marveling at the particular magic of growing up in this family, in this place and time, while grappling with her feelings of illegitimacy and shame. Part portrait of a complex family, part love letter to California in the seventies and eighties, Small Fry is an enthralling story by an insightful new literary

The oldest daughter of Steve Jobs writes a memoir of her complicated relationship with him and also with her mom. Some parts more interesting than others. ( )

1.5 stars. Maybe it would be better for someone REALLY interested in Steve Jobs. But, honestly, this just felt like a slog to me. So disjointed. Nothing all that interesting occurs or is discussed. It's not clear when in the "timeline" of Jobs' career events are happening. Be aware - Steve Jobs is portrayed as an absolute jerk. Not for me. ( )

This seems to have been the year for reading about crazy, trauma-dealing parents - and this one broke the camel's back. Most will expect the villain to be Steve Jobs, from all the negative anecdotes on the market about him, and he plays the role well. But the author's mother is equally as mean and crazy-making, which serves to give this young girl absolutely no safe haven. The writing doesn't particularly save the narrative from wallowing in the muck of trauma. I need to be more careful in choosing books so as not to read yet another story of just how awful human's can be to their own. It's a necessary story to tell, but there has to be more than - my father/mother/boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/child was crazy in this particular way, creatively abusive and mean, and I survived somehow. There needs to be more than a back-breaking recount of each and every traumatic event until the author's memory is exhausted.

Better than I expected. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up finding it riveting. ( )

Started off strong I thought, but devolved into being something akin to a pity party for the author. It become very annoying and I couldn’t wait to finish it. ( )
