The story of Robin Hood has made a strong impression on Jesse James, and he would like to become a bandit with a heart of gold, like his hero. But soon the trio is keeping the stolen money and spreading terror everywhere they go. At Nothing Gulch, Lucky Luke is more than ready for them. Jesse James sidder på sin farm og får den ide at han vil være en ny Robin Hood. Han danner en bande med sin bror Frank James - der har det med at citere Shakespeare - og sin fætter Cole Younger. De røver fra de rige og giver dem til de fattige. Og for at undgå at de fattige så bliver riger, skiftes de selv til at være fattige.
Pinkertons detektiver kommer efter dem og får Lucky Luke til at hjælpe sig med at jage James banden ud af Texas. Det vil han dog kun, hvis banden laver ballade. Luke slår sig ned i Nothing Gulch og venter. Snart kommer banden forbi og Luke advarer dem og viser dem hvor skrap han selv er med en revolver.
Det har den modsatte effekt, for James banden indleder en charmeoffensiv i byen og bliver snart almindeligt vellidte. Da de har folks fulde tillid, røver de byen, mens Luke er lokket væk.
Luke kommer hurtigt efter dem og fanger Cole, men byens borgere frikender pure Cole ved næste dags retssag. Optændt af retfærdig harme trækker Luke og Jolly Jumper sig tilbage og tager et parti skak.
Borgerne fatter pointen og bevæbner sig til tænderne til næste gang banden kommer. Banden går i fælden og Cole bliver fanget igen. Da det er ham, der har pengene den dag, kommer Jesse og Frank tilbage efter ham. De bliver også fanget. og alle tre får en omgang tjære og fjer. Desuden bliver de jaget ud af Texas, men Pinkerton agenterne er ikke for kvikke, så mere sker der dem ikke.
Lucky Luke rider hjemad mod solnedgangen.

En morsom vinkel på at tage fra de rige og give til de fattige. ( )
