Fantasy. Romance. Folklore. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:A New York Times bestseller!
"Has everything you'd want in a retelling of a classic fairy tale." - Jodi Picoult

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Beauty and the beast is one of my favorite fairy tales to get a modern spin b/c you can go so many directions with it. I immediately loved the idea of a heroine who isn't Hollywood picture perfect, but who shows her strength and bravery regardless of a disability. Both MCs showed enough growth and character development throughout the book that I got invested in them, and you learn enough about supporting characters to be curious about their future stories...anyone else hoping for Zo's book?

The premise:

MC Harper, through a series of unfortunate mishaps, winds up being taken from a D.C. alleyway as one in a long line of women Rhen and his commander Grey hope wil break his beastly curse. She has a lot of opinions but has basically been bubble-wrapped from the world as much as is possible for a low-income family that's gotten on the bad side of a loan shark in D.C.. She does what she can to help support her mom and brother, but they see her as breakable (though not broken! which I appreciated). Cast into a whole new world where she's desperate to get home, she finds previously untapped depths of courage while trying to make her way back. Though escape attempts don't work out for her (obvi, as you know, we got a novel and not a novella), she channels that energy into helping rehabilitate a country that's been ruled for years by a man who's not in full control of his faculties for months at a time. She was able to share perspectives and suggestions with Rhen as an outsider, and as someone whose family had experienced real struggle. She was such a good match for the ruler of a kingdom on its last legs: fierce, loyal, accepting of who she is, and willing to push herself to (or past) her limits to honor her commitments.

Rhen started out as a tough character to like, possibly because we get so much of Harper's perspective and she's looking at him from the lens of psuedo-kidnapee. BUT the more they interact and you see his motivations, you see he is trying to hard to be a good man and a better king. He takes care to consider all the potential consequences of his actions (sometimes to the detriment of himself and the people he is trying to help). He is incredibly humble, which I ate up--when he does good it is without fanfare or calling attention to it, he just does what needs to be done, making the hard choices over and over to do what he thinks is right and best for the people he is responsible for.

"The choices we face may not be the choices we want, but they are choices nonetheless."

One of my favorite things about Rhen, though, is how willing he is to learn from literally everyone around him. Something about his desperation in knowing he's on his his last shot to break his curse has him willing to try completely new approaches to saving his country and to interacting with the people around him, encouraged by Grey, Harper, and in a way, even the the evil witch who started all this, Lilith. I have to say, it was REALLY satisfying to see Rhen stop accepting Lilith's belittling and predictions of failure at face value as his bond with Harper grew, as though her fearlessness and determination was eating away at Lilith's power over him, and strengthening his confidence in his own instincts.

"There is no way out. You once said I plan my actions twenty moves in advance. There are no moves left to make."
"Then perhaps it is time to play like a guardsman, and not like a king."

Of those mindset changes, the most glaring is definitely about how he approaches women, or at least, one woman: Harper. In all his efforts to find a woman to love him over hundreds of seasons, it had never occured to him to find a woman to LOVE. It's as though being resigned to the former scenario NOT happening this time around with Harper allows him to be open, and show his vulnerablilities in a way he didn't with the others he'd tried to impress that the latter scenario (i.e., requited love) even had a chance of happening.

"She looks across at me. “You just said ‘victory.’ You didn’t say ‘love.’ ” I’m not sure I have a response to that. My initial reaction is to ask why that matters. My second reaction is to wonder why I ever thought it wouldn’t."

His growing feelings and respect for her allow her to act as a true ally and source of comfort for him, making them a stronger force together than he has ever been alone when managing the myriad threats against his kingdom and the people he cares about. Similarly, the camaraderie between him and Grey as the clock runs down and they lose some of their formality and see new sides of each other gave additional insight into who Rhen is when there is no girl around to impress, and what the person who has been with him longest really thinks of him.

Conclusion:
All in all, solid plot and interesting twist on a favorite. Well developed enough to have me excited for the sequel! ( )
