If the Imagination Library had not sent us this book, we would not have purchased it for ourselves. The rhyme is fun (repetitive), and trains are always exciting to read about. But the illustrations are...creepy. ( )

Superb read-together bedtime book for my two-year-old grandson, who has just gotten hooked on trains, but also has toddler difficulty settling down to sleep at night. I had misgivings about it - it's just counting a ten-car train, several times, and the pictures, while gorgeous, are rather dark, but the customer's always right, right? and grandson LOVES it. It's a current favorite, even not at bedtime.

A million extra points for take-it-for-granted diversity - the little boy counting train cars instead of sheep happens to be dark-skinned and it's just there.

Lots to see in the pictures too. Deservedly a Caldecott Honor Award winner. Probably good for any pre-K kid. ( )

I liked this book because I think that it could really be beneficial to read to kids learning how to count. The main character in the book counts the train cars over and over again until he falls asleep. He uses the train cars in place of counting sheep. I think this book is cute, and the illustrations were adorable. I liked that they showed the different types of train cars, kids can learn them and next time there is a train, discuss it with them! ( )

Soothing words, counting, sleepy pictures - this should be a great bedtime story! ( )
