Un coup d’essai impressionnant de maîtrise, culotté et rigoureux, qui passe à la moulinette des décennies de batmania, les digère et en extrait une œuvre à la fois respectueuse et iconoclaste. Si l’on peut raisonnablement être interloqué par l’attitude vindicative de Batman, animé par une forme de rage aveugle qui tranche avec l’image qu’on en gardait (tout en demeurant assez logique et dans l’esprit de Dark Knight), on ne peut qu’être fasciné par la réutilisation maligne de la plupart des éléments de l’univers du Caped Crusader. Dense, frais, moderne tout en parvenant à rester dans la mouvance des récits les plus marquants. Les graphismes sont parfois magnifiques dans l’utilisation des décors et d’un encrage sombre néogothique, mais le style particulier échoue souvent à rendre intelligible les combats et surtout les poursuites.

Sean Murphy is a terrific artist and a pretty good writer. The concept here is pure genius.

But there are just too many words on the page. For such a dynamic illustrator, I’d like to see the art tell more of the story. ( )

L'histoire de Batman revisité par Sean Murphy : et si la chauve souris neurasthénique devenait l'ennemi public numéro 1 tandis que le Joker se faisait une virginité pour devenir le chouchou de la ville ???
