Summary: This a wonderful multicultural book about a grandpa sharing with his grandson how he came to America and what it was like to be Jewish in Pikeli, Lithuania. Grandpa shares how different life is in America and this differences and similarities between America and his old home.
Personal Reaction:
I loved reading about this man's journey and the reaction that the little boy had to his grandfather.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
After reading this story to my students I could ask them to write a paper about where they think their grandparents are from and how different life might have been for them.
Or I could have my students perform an interview asking their grandparents about their childhood.

I liked this book because of the message. The story of a grandfather coming to the United States in search of freedom and a better life is relatable for so many families. The book shows a bond between grandfather and grandson as well as a picture of the American Dream. The big idea of the story is that although new adventures and experiences may be scary, many wonderful things can come out of your experiences. ( )
