"David Hedges is having an unusual midlife crisis. His boyfriend, Soren, has left him for an older man. His job is exasperating. As his life reaches new lows, his weight reaches new highs. Across the country, Julie Fiske isn't having a much better time herself. Carol, the woman (younger, of course) that Henry, her second husband, left her for, is downright likable--more likeable than Henry was. Her sullen teen daughter adamantly refuses to apply to college. Henry lays down an ultimatum--if Mandy doesn't start applying to college, she's going to come live with him and Carol. And then Mandy surprises Henry, and stuns Julie, by saying she's been working with David Hedges, Mom's first husband from long ago. It's a lie, but a good one, and, Julie thinks, not a bad idea. So when Julie calls David up out of the blue and asks if he'll help Mandy, he says of course. And when Mandy tells David he should come visit them and stay in one of their B&B rooms, he surprises everyone, including himself, by accepting. Soon David and Julie are living together and in many ways pick up exactly where they left off. But while the chemistry between them is still there, and they can finish each other's sentences, there's one conversation they never finished that is unavoidable"--… (altro)

Stephen McCauley’s “My-Ex Wife” is an elegantly written comic novel. The surprising emotional depth throws this book to the top ranks of 2018. The AIRBNB observations are hysterical. This type of advice is given to increase AIRBNB reviews—“Just keep adding tons of throw pillows. It makes the occupants a homey feel. And if they ask for anything or complain about something just give them extra towels. They will shut up.” ( )

I feel like this had a lot of nitty gritty potential that wasn't realised and a lot of plot threads that weren't quite brought out enough. Mandy's storyline was by far the most interesting. However, I really didn't like the resolution of that thread. Maybe it's because we're working on a book about camming at work right now that's really trying to shine a different light on it, but I didn't like how it was viewed as only a negative. Mandy gaining some self-confidence is pretty darn great, and, while what's-his-face's coercion was really not at all a positive, I didn't appreciate how it was only viewed in a negative light. ( )

The Ex-es plot was fun to follow and David's character, despite turning mildly saintly, carried the family development.

Not needed was the lame Julie baby subplot and no explanation for her daughter's near-total lack of self-confidence
which led her to decide to enter a stranger's car, house, and basement. Her choice to become an online sex toy
was truly bizarre. As well was the coincidence which led David to discover her new career.

It would have made more sense if he had simply followed her after finding out she was lying about her in town job. ( )

Most of the time I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry while reading this book about David, who travels from San Francisco to visit his ex-wife Julie, and her daughter Mandy. David's boyfriend has just left him for a wealthy surgeon, and his rented home is being sold out from under him. He makes his living counseling (wealthy) teenagers and their parents through the college selection and application process. David works with Mandy on college applications, helps Julie spruce up the Airbnb she's running, and falls back into an easy friendship with Julie. The plot thickens: Mandy is making some very bad choices, and doesn't know why; Julie's second ex-husband is a jerk; and there's one thing about their marriage that Julie never told David. Secondary characters add interest, complications, and comic relief. I also loved Opal, the 3 legged dog. Enjoy! ( )

This book was ... not that funny? I had it sitting in a pile of ARCs-to-be-read and a review on NPR bumped it to the top of the pile, but after finishing, I felt it was overrated. I see that one of the lists that Goodreads has it on is "what the over-35s are reading," so maybe check back in a couple of years. ( )
