Here's the first thing you need to know about this book: it does NOT tell you how to do transcendental meditation. Yes, a quote on the cover calls it a "masterclass". Yes, the back says it's the "essential guide to achieving a deeper sense of calm". But it will not teach you how to do it.
What it does tell you is the underlying principles and ideas of it, why it works, who it works for. There are also details of lots of individual experiences. This is written quite well, but after you get a certain way through it feels like you're not reading anything new.
This book has its place, but the wording on the covers is misleading. ( )

I have been exploring the concept of TM for a while now and truly think that it is something that I would find helpful. Honestly, the initial investment $400 is what is keeping me from jumping in right now. Maybe someday. That being said, the book was very interesting and reaffirmed the need for TM in so many aspects of the world today. ( )

Buyer beware. This is a long sales pitch for Transcendental Meditation. Thankfully, I got it from the library, and didn't buy it. What a waste. ( )

De kracht van transcendente meditatie door Bob Roth

Een boek met op de cover een sticker: “In 20 min. ontstrest” en
op de achterflap aanbevelingen van Cameron Diaz, Oprah Winfrey en Lena Dunham.

Zo een boek kan ik dus niet weerstaan. Vol enthousiasme, nieuwsgierigheid en verwachting begon ik te lezen. Transcendente meditatie (TM) verlaagt hoge bloeddruk, reduceert cortisol en laat galvanische huidreacties afnemen las ik, allemaal dingen waar ik vol voor wil gaan. Ik kreeg door dit boek echt zin om aan de slag te gaan. 2 Maal 20 minuten mediteren per dag zag ik best zitten. Tot ik aan pagina 40 kwam, daar bleek dat je vooraleer je aan de slag kan gaan een mantra moet krijgen van een leraar. Die leraar zit natuurlijk niet in het boek verstopt…
Het idee dat ik direct na het lezen van het boek aan de slag kon gaan kon ik dus laten varen. Beetje een sof. Dat kan aan mij liggen, misschien ben ik de enige die niet doorhad dat er bij dit boek nog een lessen-in-de-praktijk-luikje hoorde.

Voor de rest is dit een boeiend boek hoor, Bob Roth legt alle voordelen en de werking van TM heel goed uit. Interessant zijn ook de verhalen van mensen die TM al beoefenen (bijvoorbeeld David Lynch en Katy Perry).
Achteraan het boek staat ook een lijst met TM-centra in Nederland en Vlaanderen en daar kan je ongetwijfeld goede leraren vinden die je aan een mantra kunnen helpen.

Voor mensen die echt van plan zijn om met TM aan de slag te gaan: volg lessen en dit zal een super boeiend boek zijn om je voor te bereiden en extra achtergrondinformatie te krijgen.
Voor mensen die, net als ik, denken dat dit boek het enige is dat je nodig hebt om aan de slag te gaan, is het een beetje een teleurstelling. Misschien eenvoudig te voorkomen door een ‘waarschuwing’ op de achterflap te vermelden? ( )
