Crime spreads across the globe in this new collection of short stories from the Crime Writer's Association, as a conspiracy of prominent crime authors take you on world mystery tour. Highlights of the trip include a treacherous cruise to French Polynesia, a horrifying trek in South Africa, a murderous train-ride across Ukraine and a vengeful killing in Mumbai. But back home in the UK, life isn't so easy either. Dead bodies turn up on the backstreets of Glasgow, crime writers turn words into deeds at literary events, and Lady Luck seems to guide the fate of a Twickenham hood. Showcasing the range, breadth and vitality of contemporary crime-fiction genre, these 28 chilling and unputdownable stories will take you on a trip you'll never forget. I very much enjoyed the variety in these 28 stories and there were several authors that I would definitely read again.
The definite standout was Accounting for Murder by Christine Poulson. It is told entirely through copies of receipts. The reader has to “write” the story in their mind.
A good fun setting and partnership was Bombay Brigadoon by Vaseem Khan. The retired detective Chopar investigates crimes alongside his pet elephant Ganesha, who rides along in a trailer.
A few of these weren't really crime or mystery stories, but they were all entertaining. ( )

This is a great anthology of shorties from authors who all signed on to a “mystery tour”. Right away you know you’ll be tripping over bodies stashed in dark corners all over the world.

It’s an opportunity to try on new (to you) authors & then hunt down the full length novels of those you enjoyed. There’s a wide variety of styles & sub-genres within the crime community. As with all collections, everyone will have their personal favourites but here are a few that stood out for me.

“High Flyer” by Chris Simms: sending out a “high” five to the female MC. You go, girl.

“Accounting for Murder” by Christine Poulson: a clever story told solely through a series of receipts for goods & services.

“Bombay Brigadoon” by Vaseem Khan: seriously, how am I supposed to resist a story featuring a cop-turned-PI whose partner is a baby elephant?

“A Mouthful of Restaurant” by Martine Bailey: a period piece that evokes the golden age of mysteries.

“Writer’s Block” by Paul Gitsham: a neat, entertaining story of being in the wrong place at the right time.

So now I have a few more authors/books to throw on Mount TBR.

Just a side note. I received this from Trafalgar Square Publishing & Orenda (via Netgalley) & their list of authors was correct. However, there must be more than one edition of this collection as it’s very different from the authors listed on Goodreads. ( )

In all honesty, short stories are not usually my thing but I couldn't resist this collection of twenty-eight stories by some of the crime writing fraternity's biggest players. A wonderful array of respected crime authors have contributed towards this collection with a theme of travel and intriguing destinations and I did indeed feel like I had travelled the world in twenty-eight easy steps, whizzing through the pages of felonies, follies and fatalities.

By the time I closed the book I felt like I had met all of human nature and experienced places I had never been to. It's difficult to review short stories as you can't say much about the plot because it would practically give it all away. But I can say that this is a collection of pure quality which thrilled me. I think it would be ideal for dipping into on those occasions when you have only a few minutes. The stories range in length and you can easily pick one that fits the bill. I'm one of those people who feels compelled to read from front to back but you can pick one by your favourite author or one with a title that catches your eye.

All in all it's a great selection and a must have if you enjoy crime and short stories. ( )
