When software systems are delivered too late, when they fail tomeet the needs of their users, when only a fraction of theircapacity is used, when their maintenance costs more than theirdevelopment, when changes are impossible ? then there is afrantic search for new and better engineering techniques andtools. Dahlbom ande Mathiassen advocate a different approach to theseproblems: pausing and reflection. Surprisingly little time in theeducation of systems developers is devoted to a consideration ofthe methods, goals and politics of computerization. The core of thebook is an examination of the notion of quality itself. Theeffective computer professional must arrive at his or her sense ofwhat quality can and should mean in a particular situation in orderto resolve the inevitable creative tensions between the nature ofpeople and that of computers, between structured systems and theprocess of change. The authors draw on a rich range of literature from philosophy, organizational theory, and technology and social change to supporttheir points. But, adducing many real-life examples they avoidjargon and presuppose no formal background. Computer inContext will help students, computer professionals, andmanagers alike understand better what it is they are trying to dowith computer systems, how and why.
