When George wakes up one morning and discovers his shadow having a meal at the breakfast table, he isn't sure what to make of it. His shadow follows him (as all shadows should), but is otherwise uninterested in acting in the expected fashion. Eventually George becomes accustomed to this new companion, and even finds his company entertaining. Then his shadow decides to take a break. Will George be lonely, or will he find a new alter-ego?

Originally published in Italian, George and His Shadow is the second picture-book I have read from Italian author Davide Cali and French illustrator Serge Bloch, following upon their earlier title, The Enemy. I found the story here entertaining, and particularly liked the ending, which, with its presentation of a new surprise, hints at further adventures for its eponymous hero. It reminded me, in this sense, of books like Imogene's Antlers, in which one unexpected occurrence gives way to another. Recommended to anyone looking for fun new picture-books with a humorous bent, and cartoon-style illustrations. ( )
