Two sisters share a room - we see them sleeping in twin beds on the title page spread - but their reactions to the new snow outside are opposite. The red-haired sister is excited: she bundles up immediately and heads outdoors to play, while the brown-haired sister cozies up with a blanket and a pile of books. Later, they switch, and at the end of the day, they come together to share their happy snow day. Gouache and watercolor illustrations are full of detail; readers could spend a long time, if inclined, discerning the ways that the sisters are different (and the same) and how they spent their days. Cute, sweet, and a reminder that one way sisters might get along best looks like both of them doing their own thing.

Two sisters enjoy a snow day in their different ways in this sweet picture-book debut from author Kerri Kokias. As one gets ready to go outside and play, the other prepares for a cozy day inside. Then, when the first sister is ready for the warmth of the indoors, her counterpart heads out. Their parallel narratives, told in single-word sentences, are depicted on facing pages.

Appropriately enough, given the subject matter of Snow Sisters!, it is currently quite snowy and beautiful out, here in New York City, giving me an added appreciation for Kokias' story. The text is simple, but effectively communicates each girl's contrasting activity, while the colorful artwork by Teagan White is really quite lovely. The visuals are really what make the book, as White uses a bright but subtle color palette to create scenes that feel cozy, even when occurring out in the snow. Recommended to anyone looking for fun new winter picture-books. ( )
