After discovering that she is not human, twelve-year-old Alice Mayfair is on a mission to find out who and what she is, but she must do it alone because her best friend Millie Maximus, an undersized Bigfoot who lives in the forest near Alice's school in upstate New York, is focused on fulfilling her dream to sing for a nationally televised talent competition. Alice finally found a good friend in Mille (the bigfoot child) in the first volume, but in this one, Millie abandons Alice almost immediately to seek her fame on a "America's Got Talent"-like show. Another girl assists her, and Alice is alone again. The sinister government agency that was hinted at in the first book plays a big role in this one, and Jeremy turns out to be a pretty good kid. But much of this story feels forced and faked. The agency was just too preposterously evil in its nature and methodology to be believable. Millie so totally abandoning Alice? Not really believable if you've read the first book. And the story Alice's mother tells her at the end of the book just had me rolling my eyes.
The last pages left it clear that Ms. Weiner is planning a third volume, (not released as of this writing). I might read another one, but I won't be waiting on Barnes & Noble's doorstep the day it's released. ( )
