A very practical, frank, and detailed guidebook to pregnancy, parenthood, and the first few years of life. I especially appreciated the calming way all the facts and research were presented. The authors did an amazing job of pushing aside all the "noise" around these topics and focusing only on the most crucial aspects. New parenthood can be a very fraught time and guilt surrounding these decisions can be deep. I'm sure that many parents will feel informed and comforted by the balanced advice the authors provide. Written by Dr. Cecilia Chrapkowska, a board-certified specialist in pediatrics, and Dr. Agnes Wold, PhD, a professor and researcher, Parenthood the Swedish way is not your typical pregnancy and parenting book. The book starts out with a frank discussion of gender inequity in parenting; elsewhere, when considering a common pregnancy guideline I was delighted to read the phrase “the literature does not suggest that this is true.” Its just not the sort of approach taken in a “What to Expect” style of book. (Although as other reviewers note the book could be better at citing the studies it is referencing). The world needs more feminist and fact-based pregnancy and parenting books. My overall impression is that this is good guide to what to expect in pregnancy and the first year or so afterward. (I should have read the giveaway blurb more carefully, because I didn't notice that this book is focused on infancy, not parenthood in general. I have a 4-year-old kid, so the baby stuff is less helpful now. Still, that's my careless mistake, not the book's or authors' fault.)I can't say that I really see the "Swedish way" here, except for references to the childcare and parental leave policies specific to Sweden, but maybe I just don't see it because as a Swedish-American who's lived in Sweden, I'm already really used to advice like this. I don't know. Either way, it's very common-sense in some ways and very uncommon in others - especially in using evidence-based arguments to reject some common fears about parenting. Swedes are some of the world's happiest people, and their children are no exception. "Parenthood the Swedish Way" will help you and your family embrace the Scandi style of childrearing: practical, egalitarian, and free from outdated myths. Expectant parents will be relieved to hear: Put away the vacuum - dust does not lead to allergy. Breastfeeding protects against allergies? Never has done, never will do. Stop boiling bottles and pacifiers - sterilising is unnecessary in most industrial countries. Think you shouldn't drink alcohol when breastfeeding? Plain moralism. Dr Agnes Wold and Cecilia Chrapkowska present cutting-edge research from around the world which can guide you to make better parenting choices. Drawing on Sweden's famously-generous parental leave and enlightened social policies, they also demonstrate the importance of equal parenting and provide practical tools for parents everywhere to share responsibility equally. From the progressive land in the North, this is the fact-based, feminist guide to parenting you have been waiting for. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
