"This picture book explores the intergenerational impact of Canada's residential school system that separated Indigenous children from their families. The story recognizes the pain of those whose culture and language were taken from them, how that pain is passed down and shared through generations, and how healing can also be shared. Stolen Words captures the beautiful, healing relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. When she asks him how to say something in his language - Cree - her grandpa admits that his words were stolen from him when he was a boy. The little girl then sets out to help her grandfather regain his language."--Publisher's description.… (altro)

This book is about the relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. She asked her grandfather how to say a word in his language and he told her that his language was stolen from him when he was a child. The little girl helps her grandfather discover his language again. ( )

This is a powerful picture book that explains how the Cree language was stolen from so many. The story begins with a conversation between a young girl and her grandfather. She is excited to get home and ask him how to say "Grandfather" in their native language, Cree. He explains to her how his language was stolen from him through the residential school that separated him from his family and tried to erase his culture. The young girl helps her grandfather to remember Cree through a book she borrows from her teacher.
This is a powerful story that can be used to teach about the challenges Native Americans have faced. This story would be an appropriate read aloud for elementary grades. ( )

I love the art in this one, and the way it talks about residential school programs that forbade indigenous people from speaking their native languages in an age-appropriate way.

Impactful book about an important conversation between a grandfather and granddaughter, and a lesson in history. After she asks him to teach her some words in their indiginous language of Cree, he is put in a position to explain how he lost his language as a child when he was forced into a residential school and separated from his family in an attempt to erase his culture. Emotional and poignant.

This book is appropriate for kindergarten-2nd grade. It's about a little girl and her grandfather and how they try to keep their culture alive even through the obstacle of her grandfather being put in residential school and losing his language. I thought this was a sweet story and I would keep this in my classroom and possibly use it as a read aloud. ( )
