This is a comprehensive and scholarly book on Brochs, dry stone fortified towers only found in Scotland, mostly in the Northern Higlands and the island grroups of the Hebridies, Orkneys and Shetlands, and all now ruined to varying degrees. It is well illustrated with 53 b/w photos and diagrams and a fine group of 23 colour photos. There is a well-notated Bibliography, a list of the better preserved Brochs with OS Map references and brief descriptions, and an Index. Brochs are an obscure topic, little known outside the UK, but this is a valuable guide to the subject for beginners to partial specialists. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Risorse esterne che parlano di questo libro Wikipedia in inglese (12)The brochs are among the best-known ancient monuments in Scotland. However, despite a long and colourful history of research, it is only in the last 20 years that the results of field survey, excavation and radiocarbon dating have begun to flesh out a picture of their evolution and development from around 600 BC to AD 100. This well-illustrated book describes the current state of our knowledge, probes the long-running controversies over their origins and function, and provides an annotated list of the most accessible and best-preserved broch sites. Individual chapters cover: Beginnings; Anatomy of a broch tower; Broch landscapes, broch people; Lords of the north; Lords of the south; Beyond the brochs.
