Justice Volkov is the youngest Alpha Zenith to ever lead the wolf shifters. Following in his father's large paw prints was a responsibility he met head on. Now at age thirty-three, he is alpha of the alphas. As a direct descendant of the original Siberian pack, his wolf is bigger and stronger than Justice himself is sometimes able to control. His wolf howled long and hard but Justice kept it inside. It felt like a bass drum beating against his rib cage. The harsh breaths, angry snarls, and the determined pacing inside him were overtaking him. Justice takes his role of leadership and his legacy very seriously. He has little time for romance, not to mention a true mate. His packs are his priority. With a human government trying to regulate them, an uprising of rogue shifters, and a violent team of scientists trying to experiment on them, Justice has his hands way too full. Chadwick "Wick" Bentley is not enthusiastic when the captain of his escort tells him he has to leave his comfortable London home and go back to the States. As the Vampire King, he has no choice but to get his species back in line before they cause any more chaos. At over one hundred years old, Wick is no one to trifle with, but his smooth, charismatic manner makes him quite unique, despite the negative reputation vampires have. Wick has had nothing but time up to this point. He doesn't feel the need to make issues pressing. Nothing is urgent in his life. Until he meets Justice. His beloved. "Natural enemies can't be mates." Or so Justice thought. He knows his skepticism and rejection is hurting his mate, so while he fights their connection, Wick gets help from a source very close to Justice to help him win his beloved's heart. Wick is a force all on his own, but when he's blessed with a special gift from the Mother herself, not even Justice's powerful wolf can prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled. This was a lovely M/M shifter romance. What happens when the alpha of alphas' true mate is the king of vampires? A little shock, denial, and eventually a whole lot of sexy times!

There is upheaval and potential war brewing between the wolf shifters and vampires. Justice and Chadwick were chosen by The Mother [mother nature] to out a stop to all that nonsense and bring all of her children together to stand against those that would pervert their abilities.

I loved that characters, the story, and the (small bit) of mythology behind the supernatural beings. This book only just scratched the surface. I look forward to seeing how it all unfolds. ( )

I think this is my third 3-star book in a row but this book was also just fine. It had way less plot than I was expecting based on the summary and the cover. This also isn't really enemies-to-lovers. Wick and Justice resolved their differences almost immediately. If you are going to read this, just know that it almost all romance with very little plot.

At the very beginning there were some issues with the writing for me. There was a ton of info-dumping in the first chapter. Characters were introduced in ways that seemed very unnatural with Justice just thinking about his siblings in a way that didn't really make sense.
His sister was an enigma to most. She was an alpha, but her name meant tranquil leader so she didn't flex her position.

Why would he be thinking that? It's clearly only for the benefit of the reader which really breaks immersion. Characters also do the thing where they say things to another character that the other character would definitely already know.
If you hadn't built the prisons, the the humans would've. No human be confined to a cage the size of a kennel. They shouldn't be allowed to shift and run only on the full moon like we live in some sort of Werewolf in Paris movie.

Again, this is basically sad directly to the reader and breaks immersion. This sort of writing does get better as the book goes along but this did impact the the world-building for me.

Justice is a werewolf and Wick is a vampire and they meet in Nevada because of a fight between some werewolves and vampires. They were both going there meet the governor, which never actually happened. This sounds like an interesting plot, but we never actually get that. More on that later. This is a fated mates story so there is insta-love. I don't mid this sort of insta-love. I only have a problem with that trope when there's no in-universe explanation for it. However, their first meeting is wild. Justice is trying so hard to resist that he is literally DRIPPING sweat! I personally did not find that to be sexy or romantic at all. Justice then runs away for a little bit. The vampire-werewolf feud was just not developed enough for me to believe he would ignore his mate so this part of the book just seemed unnecessary, especially when considering how quickly they made up.

Like I said, there is very little plot in this book. The two main conflicts in this book are a rogue pack which hates vampires and a jealous guard. Both get taken very quickly in the end but the rogue pack is the more overarching one and isn't resolved until the very end. However, this plot is basically completely absent from the middle of the book. It really lowers the stakes of the final conflict because we really don't know anything about this pack or its goals and it's all taken care of within a single chapter. At the end, they say that they also were able to destroy the machine the rogue pack had that was copying their DNA which I had completely forgotten was a thing because it was never discussed at all. I would have liked to have seen just a bit more done with this overall conflict.

There was also surprisingly little sex in this book. There wasn't zero or anything but there was a lot more fade to black than I was expecting. This isn't objectively negative and some readers may even enjoy that. I personally would have liked to have seen a bit more because it would have helped establish the relationship to me. What was there, I didn't love. I don't care if you have rapid healing abilities, please still use lube.

Just a few more odds and ends. There was a Spanish character who would just say certain random words in Spanish which is something I have never encountered when speak to real-life Spanish speaking people! I see this a lot and it is such a weird and bad choice every time. Authors, please don't do this. some of the other side characters I did like and would like to see more of. I'm interested in the next book about Justices brother Alek and Wicks friend Bell. I own another book by this author and I will consider picking it up in the future. I did have my problems with this but it definitely didn't turn me off the author. Hopefully a different book will be a better fit for me. ( )
