"Coconut Kind of Day" is a collection of poems each from the perspective of a young Caribbean girl in Trinidad. This collection of poems all describe a little girl's daily life, starting in the morning with a poem called "Morning Songs" and ends with a poem called "Night Songs." These poems include her going to school, observing nature, activities she participates in with her best friend, and describing her mother, brother, and teacher. These poems are written in many different ways, emphasizing different elements of poetry and certain writing styles. In this book, the author incorporates the little girl's dialect. For example, she says "dohn," which translates to "don't." With how the author incorporates her dialect, the reader has a sense of what her accent sounds like, helping us understand her way of pronouncing certain words. An element of poetry in this book is the onomatopoeia that is used. The author uses words like "splash," "crash," and "gonck-gonck" to help the reader have a multi-dimensional experience by incorporating words that trigger sounds the reader could be familiar with. Overall, reading about this little girl's daily life in poems written in her dialect was very nice. I would definitely read this book with students to introduce poetry elements like onomatopoeia and to show diversity in picture books. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
