I feel really bad. A friend said this series is wonderful, and relevant to my interests, but I have a hard time telling the difference between comics characters unless they look wildly different. And it's not because this comic is Japanese; this happens with American comics too. (My spouse tells me the current Transformers comic is brilliant. I wouldn't know because they all look like the same blocky robot to me.) So I can't read this. Makes me sad.

What a beautiful, heartbreaking, powerful beginning to what I'm sure will be an equally quality series. Very good at handling young transgender characters who are wrestling with their own gender identities. The 'Rose of Versailles' sub-plot was brilliant, although I wonder how many readers -got- it. Thank goodness I already have the second volume! I'd hate to have to wait too long for it. ( )

Deze manga wordt ingeleid door de vertaler die mij iets leerde waar ik geen weet van had. Namelijk dat in het Japans de aanspreekvormen niet naar geslacht zijn zoals wij hier in het Westen doen maar naar status ten opzichte van de persoon zelf. Dus bijvoorbeeld of het een ouder iemand is of juist jonger. Ook grappig dat zelfs tweelingen daar rekening mee houden bij het elkaar aanspreken waarbij het vroeger zo was dat de eerst geborene de jongste was onder het principe het laatst erin, het eerst eruit.

Deze manga gaat over het ontdekken van eigen identiteit bij een transpersoon en een lesbisch meisje in hun schooljaren. Hoe daarmee omgegaan wordt is heel ontroerend zoals men in manga lekker diep in het gevoel kan gaan zitten.
Het verspringen van de ene situatie naar de andere was voor mij vaak onverwachts en soms waren de overgangen zelfs onbegrijpelijk. Teksten als ondertussen bij xxx thuis of de volgende dag op school zijn totaal afwezig en soms moest ik maar raden waar ze waren. Ik kon ook niet alle personages goed uit elkaar houden waardoor het met name in het begin gokken was wie ik nu voor me had.

Het is het begin van een manga-reeks en de maker was nog wat zoekende. Maar ik denk dat het met de vijftien delen die het uiteindelijk geworden zijn toch nog heel succesvol is geworden. ( )

Overall, I think the book is okay. The characters all look the same so it's hard to tell them apart at first. The story feels like it has gaps and jumps a bit too much only to have a half explaining flashback or slight mention of missing plot. But in general, it's a cute story.

Personally, I don't understand the whole transgender/gender identification thing. You're born a certain gender and nothing you do will change your genetics. But that's just my opinion.
