Sentimental and nature-loving story of the first of May when a carnival comes to Thrush Green area in England. Two romances and two stories of the coming of old age. Pretty good. ( ) Thrush Green is a little village in the Cotwolds and it is here we meet a wonderful cast of characters. It's the 1950's and the local gypsy fair is arriving in town. The whole novel occurs in one day, though the characters reflect on previous events. 6-year-old Paul is recovering from an illness and is anticipating the Curdle Fair with it's rides, sweets, and prizes. His Aunt Ruth is looking after him while his parents are away and the young doctor attending him smiles at his Aunt frequently. https://readableword.wordpress.com/2021/09/12/thrush-green-by-miss-read/ Recommended by a "gentle reads" booklist. It's a VERY gentle read that plods along slowly through a large cast of characters and troubles. Not as substantive as Mitford or other series, but definitely nothing objectionable. But neither were there any characters that lived. So I'm not tempted to pick up the next book all that soon. Pleasant, engaging tale of a small village (in the Cotswolds, I believe) in the first half of the 20th century on a single spring day when the annual "fair" (we would say "carnival" in the States) came to town. Things aren't all rosy, but they do seem to work out as they ought to, allowances being made for meanness and mortality. Just the ticket with a cup of tea and a cat on your lap. 2016 nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Miss Read's charming chronicles of small-town life have achieved an almost legendary popularity worldwide by offering a welcome return to a gentler time and "wit, humor, and wisdom in equal measure" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). This volume introduces Thrush Green, the neighboring village to Fairacre: its blackthorn bushes, thatch-roofed cottages, enchanting landscape, and jumble sales. Readers will delight in a new cast of characters and also welcome familiar faces as they become immersed in the village's turn of events on one pivotal day -- May Day. Before the day is over, life and love and perhaps eternity will touch the immemorial peace of the village. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
