Such a good book! I can't wait for the next one! I really enjoyed this books simply for the representation of the ace spectrum in it but also because it's a really good story. I think it took a lot longer to get really exciting, unlike the first one, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I also am glad the Felicity got a solid character development and learned about how to hold herself in this time and place. Joana and Sim are great and I love them so much! ( )

While I have been making good on my plan to read more LGBTQ stories this year (2019), I am pleasantly surprised to stumble upon ace (asexual) spectrum characters/leads in some of my reads (which, for one demonstrates I have a ways to go in broadening my reads but also secondly, shows that young adult lit is pretty lit in terms of having a range of characters).

I'm not sure what else I could say given that other reviews are so thorough in why this is really good- strong (and by this, I mean solidly built in their personalities, memorable) female characters that have different strengths/aren't carbon copies of one another, flaws in our heroine (Felicity is understandably upset about not being able to pursue her dream of medicine through traditional means, but it's ~fascinating~ to see it gradually dawn on her that she *is* afforded certain privileges that others don't have in fictional 1700s Western society). Also also, parts of this are DEFINITELY inspired by 1700 naturalists, and in particular Maria Sibylla Merian, who with her daughter Dorothea, illustrated intricate plates of entomology from field expeditions to Suriname. Women have been involved in science for a LONG time, and it's nice to see [fictional] acknowledgement of real world work.

also! Dogs. and dragons. Animals are girls' best friends. ( )

I thought this book was such a fun adventure. I really loved being in felicity head. I really loved how LEE crafted this world. I also loved how many different settings this book included. I also really enjoyed how this book handled the topics of race, women rights and just women kicking but and taking names. I thought the pacing in this book had some slow moments but overall it was a solid read. This book was def a fun read and I really loved seeing former characters as well. I thought the hits of LGBTQ romance was so well done. And I really am curious what book is coming next! ( )

I loved The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and perhaps that’s the main reason I was so disappointed in this novel. One of the main aspects of Gentleman’s Guide that I enjoyed was the humor, which was sorely lacking in Lady’s Guide. Instead the reader was subjected to continued preaching about feminism and how suppressed women were in that era – yes we understand that; it’s been done before and it did not need to be announced during every conversation. Felicity was such a frustratingly weak character until the middle-end of the novel, which didn’t line up at all with her courage in the first of the series. I’ll return to Gentleman’s Guide, I’m sure, but I have no interest in the rest of the series. ( )
